Do you have any install discs? If so you may need to do a repair, back up all your data first though.

I was told to do the following when my Windows Media Player (an older version) was corrupted - it's quite some time ago, but it might work.
Go to your hard drive, open Program Files, find the Windows Media Player folder, and rename wmplayer.exe to wmplayer.old - the setup file should be should be automatically called up after the renaming, and then you may be able to reinstall Windows Media Player.

PS: the file which you have to rename might be simply shown as "wmplayer", and its description as "application". This is the exe file :-) You can see this if you right-click on the file and view its properties.

I had a problem like this a while back....Check your event viewer for error codes. I think if I recall my event viewer was corrupt and gave me a code. I then fixed that and consequently was able to activate WMP from programs and features. What one has to do with the other is beyond me.

Pallas i tried that didnt seem to work i do have a windows 7 oem copy but i cant risk losing data and whenever i launch wmp it says your wmp isnt installed correctly would like to visit Microsoft website and i go there but there is nothing of use. ther was a setup file in the wmp folder but it said "there is a more recent version of wmp on your pc and it is not possible to repair or install.

okay, i guess the method with renaming the exe file only worked for older wmp versions on windows xp. i searched around some more and found this link; it's for windows 7 & wmp 12 and has some other suggestions (i think you already tried out the one on page 2):

otherwise, you'll probably have to do a repair install of windows, or, if possible for your needs, use another media player like vlc :-/

sorry about the lack of capital letters, am typing this post from a mobile device ;-)
