Hello there MS Office Board.

I need to get my hands MS Word.
But the "problem" i face is that i can only get MS Word by buying the MS Office package (that i dont want or need) from what i understand.

And how do i know if i can use the lisence key on different PCs.
Lets say i instal it on my main PC, and then after a few weeks or so i uninstal it. Can i then install it on my Laptop?

You can buy Word separately but it's bloody expensive. Google searching my be your best option for a better deal, eBay sellers may even have product keys cheaper but that's just a guess. Even look for an older copy of Word, say 2010 (better than 2013 in my opinion) see if you can pick that up any cheaper.

And how do i know if i can use the lisence key on different PCs.

You can, if the copy is decommissioned on the first PC it was installed on prior to installing it elsewhere.

"You can, if the copy is decommissioned on the first PC it was installed on prior to installing it elsewhere." Not sure that's exactly true.

I'm building up a new desktop system to replace my existing desktop and re-installing all the software on the new desktop exactly as it was on the old desktop. Since I'm upgrading the OS, I can't just clone the drives. I have two separate licenses for Office Professional 2010 Plus, one for my desktop and one for my laptop. Microsoft says you can install Office Professional 2010 Plus on two different computers that you personally own and they give the EXAMPLE of "one desktop and one laptop".

When I tried to install Office Professional 2010 Plus on the new desktop using the old desktop license, it said that I couldn't because the license was already in use. That's true because the old desktop is still in operation. Then I tried installing it using the laptop license and it accepted that with no problem. So, it seems that Microsoft does allow the installation and use of Office Professional 2010 Plus on two different personal systems at the same time, but their EXAMPLE of a "desktop and a laptop" is really a hard and fast rule. I can only assume that Microsoft can sense the difference between a mobile-class and a desktop-class processor.

My copy of Office 2010 is on two desktops as we speak, my main rig and my backup rig. It's also been on two other old PCs prior to these two as well, only one of those four in total was a laptop.

Wow thanks for all the feedback guys!
Yeah i had a look around last night and stumbleupon Open Office.
As i understand it, Open Office is close to the same thing as MS Word. And i can open and save Word files with it.
But il take a look at the other suggestions aswell, and see what i think is best for my use.

Yes, I have a copy of Office Pro 2007 like that. Been installed on a dozen systems. It's called a Volume License.

That's not normal behavior, at least not in the US. Possibly the laws are different in Europe regarding software licenses. Just out of curiosity what is the Volume Label on that disc?

Not exactly the Volume Label number I was looking for, but the disc label answers the question nicely. Did you notice the part on the label that says "All use subject to volume license agreement"? It is a Volume Licensed version and that explains why you can install it multiple times and on different systems.

Well the place I bought it from obviously got the product description completely wrong then stating it was for use on two computers. In which case it makes it even more of a bargain at £30.

Thanks, that reminds me. I should get our second-youngest grandchild to pick up a student version of Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus for me before he graduates from the University of Michigan next spring. At $47.17 USD for a physical DVD with a license code in the package, two different installs allowed and all just OTC (as opposed to a key card, a download, a lengthy activation process and many other hoops to jump through, like Adobe Acrobat Pro student version), it's a real bargain. :D

Yes! Congratulations, you really lucked out on that one! At the current exchange rate, £30 compared to $47.17, The University of Michigan's price is within a dollar or two of what you paid. Got to put that on my To Do list!
