I want to transfer files from xp to win7 via LAN. however, i want the files to go to a specific partition that i just created for these files. Im unsure how to select the proper partition. there is nothing on the new partition, no OS, i just want to use it as storage.
I have a 1tb hdd in the computer the files are to be transfered to. when i did a clean install of win7, i created a 100gb partition to use as my primary, (with my OS and basically everything), leaving the other 900gb unallocated space. i just created a 24gb partition to use to back up files from another computer.
in command prompt as administrator, in diskpart, i selected the new volume, but im not seeing a new drive designation for the new partition in which this volume is supposed to be located.
i also did not choose a label for the new partition, such as C; D; E;...., so that does not help with trying to locate this partition in windows explorer.
im lost and dont want to make any stupid mistakes.
it seems like this should be really easy to do.
am i missing something?

right click my computer, choose management then choose the disk manager, you should find your new partition there, and be able to assign it a drive letter if the system hasn't already.

Assuming you have a router all you need to do is activate sharing on the appropriate folders and do a copy paste. It will more than likely be easier to do it from the win 7 machine as the win xp machine will ask for the admin account and password information.

ok, im on the win 7 machine, computer/computer management/disk management/format. i have labeled the volume and placed it under NTFS file system.
for the allocation unit size i want the entire 24576mb to be formatted but it isnt an option. would that be the default option? other than that i have the quick format box checked but have not pressed ok to apply changes yet

as long as the target size is relatively close, it rarely does give you exactly what you want. I wouldn't be concerned if you are working with blank disc space, the only reason to be concerned would be if it were trying to format a larger block than you had freed.

Now how do find my new partition to paste the files into?
in disk management the partition is listed as a healthy primary partition. but in windows explorer, in the left pane, under computer it only lists Local disk (C:). the new partiton is (N:), but i cant find it when looking for the destination for the files. in short, i can transfer the files, but not to the new partition.

You use Disk Mgmt only to create and format the partition.

After that use Explorer by clicking Computer to rightclick share the drive and its contents with Homegroup. If not Homegroup, then rightlick on partition, on Properties tab under Security>Add "everyone" should cover it.

Do this for the folder you're copying from as well.

ok, so the drive was basically undiscoverable because it wasnt completely set up. i thought i had labeled the drive by right clicking on the partition, clicking properties, and putting a label next to the icon under the general tab. but that doesent do it. you have to right click the partition and select "change drive letter and paths". after doing that the new drive showed up and i can now save files to that partition.
thanks alot guys.
