IE 11 missing and cannot be re-installed

For some unknown reason IE11 is missing (originally installed 12/2013 according to Update history). Yet when it is downloaded from MS website and an attempt made to re-install an err msg says that installation cannot complete because a more recent version is already installed. Is this a bug in IE11 ? If so, shd an earlier version be installed ? If so how are the apparent remnants from IE completely removed ? Thanx.

Which version of ie exists now if you open ie ?
If Internet explorer opens use Alt+HA or Gear symbol and About Internet explorer,
You can see if Option 2 here will roll you back or straighten out any mess ?

Hi BewilderedBob,
You can still get back your IE 11 by using System Restore.
System Restore is a tool that allows windows to go back to a particular time with settings and files back. It's just like a 'Time Machine'.
To use System Restore Go to - 1)Start Button 2)All programs 3)Accessories 4) System Tools 5) System Restore or Search for it in the search box.
Then Select "Choose a Different Restore Point"
After that Select the date and time when you installed IE11 in the discription it should be written as "Installed Internet Explorer 11"
Now select 'Next' and Finally 'Finish'
Your Computer will now restart
Note : Before installing disable your antivirus or it(system restore) will not work
If it does not help you I suggest to Install a new Browser like Google Chrome or Firefox (i suggest google chrome)

IE-11 altho previously installed appears to have completely disappeared. But when i try to re-install an err msg claims that the newly downloaded version cannot be installed because a later version is already installed.

Also the 'command prompt' entry from accessories menu has also disappeared. However a command prompt can still be entered from task mgr.

Are these 2 items related ? Could this situation have resulted from a recent attempt to download a "legitimate" product but something unintended was also installed. Several malware checkers have been run but nothing adverse has been found.

A link to "Uninstall IE11 in an elevated cmd prompt" has been provided but not yet tested since i'm not sure of the extent of the current disappearing act and want to avoid removing any other valid items due to my lack of knowledge.

Plz advise the safest approach to complete recovery.

ps: is 'SCANNOW' recommended ?? If so will it work for an OS (Win 7 Home) that was factory installed ?

My concern is that i don't know which restore point would be used to recover the missing IE. Also wouldn't valuable subsequent updates be lost ?

Your second recommendation (forget abt IE and install another browser) makes a lot of sense since there would be no additional data loss.

Hi see what this does,
Add the Run box to the Start menu list you can also use Winkey+R to open the Run box,

Open the Run command and Paste either of these strings into it and Okay,

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

iexplore.exe -extoff

Shortcuts can get deleted pr accidentally moved.

Good deal Bob,
The iexplore.exe is the normal internet explorer execute file,
Did this command open ie ?

The other 2 were Extensions Off = -extoff
So if you only used the top one or two please try the third to see if it opens okay,
Pin it to your taskbar,
