I started having this problem a few days ago with IE 10 where the browser windows would not open on top. They opened behind whatever was already on my desk top.

I upgraded to IE 11 and it's still happening.

If there's a setting to change that, I'm not finding it.

OS is Win 7 Professional 64 bit Service Pack 1.

The Z-order (stacking) of windows is handled in part by the video drivers.

Maybe you can update to a newer version or maybe revert to an older version.

I updated my video drivers yesterday, did Windows Update, rebooted, and since then the browser windows have been opening on top the way I want them to.

Don't know what did the trick but we'll see how long it lasts.

Thanks.

Your awesome for reading this.
After two days, it started doing it again.

I did the reset and rebooted. It's OK for now.

So now my browser windows are opening slower than usual.

Is there something I can set to fix that?

Do you mean loading websites?

That is because the cache is cleared when a reset is done.

If you mean actually opening a browser window, I am not sure why. Have you restarted?

Your awesome for reading this.
The slowness is resolved but today, just now, the browser windows suddenly stopped opening on top.

Seems like I can fix it by rebooting and the fix is good for a day or two.

But I don't want to have to keep rebooting frequently. Any ideas.

This happens when opening the browser cold? How do you open it? From a shortcut on the desktop, taskbar, start menu? Does this happen if you close it and open it again? If it is repeatable, next time it happens, try opening it from the Program Files (x86) folder itself, also try the version in the Program Files folder, same thing? Try from the alternate places mentioned as well. Does it occur no matter where you open it from? A Guy

Good idea.

The first 32bit version should open and close in a second or so. It just starts the 64bit version. The test proposed should let us know if some part of that process is broken.

A Guy:

I did a little experimenting even before reading your comments.

If I open a browser window from the internet icon on my desktop, it opens behind.

If I open a website for which I have a shortcut on the desktop, it opens behind.

If I open a browser window from the internet icon on my task bar or from the start menu, it opens on top.

If I open a browser window and minimize it to the task bar then future browser windows open on top.

I would try creating new shortcuts for your desktop (using iexplore.exe in program files (x86), or your pinned taskbar shortcut). Use that and see if it opens in front. If so, then recreate your saved desktop shortcuts to web sites via the new IE desktop shortcut. A Guy
