IE 8 Crashes & Recovers

I've got a x64 machine and use IE 8. When I open IE 8 and use the search bar, I get this:

If I click on Close Program, the page refreshes and all tabs are recovered. After that, as long as I don't close IE 8, I can use the search function with no problem. If I close and reopen, it goes through the same scenario again.

Any thougths? Thanks,

It seems to be just IE 8. Google, Ask & Yahoo searches work just fine.

I'm currently traveling and I just booted up from a hotel in Pennsylvania. Everything is fine; no crashes. I dunno . . . . .

Bing should not cause crashes. But sometime they happen. You could try an IE8 reset: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset.

I was thinking along the lines of the search engine code used for the search bar was corrupt.

I'll try that but, right now, away from home, it's working just fine. No crashes.

When it does crash, it's a little weird. I'll open IE 8, type something in the Bing search bar, click on the results , , , , crash & refresh . . . . everything okay. If I leave IE open, there are no more crashes. Close it, however, and reopen, I have to do the crash process, again. Kinda odd.

Iif IE is crashing, it would be useful to get a dump of it crashing. You'll have to do two things though due to IE8 to do this reliably:

1. Edit the registry as follows - add the following registry value (open regedit, browse to the KEY location, and right-click the KEY and add a new DWORD (32 bit) value):
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Internet Explorer\Main
Value: TabProcGrowth
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0

2. Download procdump - download and extract procdump.exe to a directory on your machine (C:\Temp for this example). Close *all* iexplore.exe windows that may be open, and then run the command C:\TEMP\procdump.exe -e -ma -x "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "C:\TEMP\iexplore.dmp" from an elevated cmd prompt (right click, "Run as Administrator")- this should open IE under the debugger. Make IE crash as you've mentioned it does, and afterwards a .dmp file should be generated in C:\temp called "iexplore.dmp".


Zip or RAR up that file and upload it somewhere so we can analyze it.
