IE & MSN Unable to Connect

Hello everyone,

Recently I have encountered a problem where my IE as well as MSN is unable to connect to the internet. They happened around the same time, thus I believe the problem is linked. It simply says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

The thing is, everything else I use has no problems whatsoever. This includes google chrome, firefox, AIM, skype, WoW and all kinds of stuff.

I've tried a lot of solutions with regards to tinkering around:
Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings

I've also tried virus scans, resetting IE settings to default, reinstalling of both IE and MSN and nothing seems to work.

Thus, I'm absolutely befuddled as to why I'm still unable to connect to the internet. Could this be a problem between my ISP and my computer?

Would deeply appreciate any helpful advice!

What version of Internet Explorer are you running? This will help us determine the problem.

Well here is a possible solution.
Many programs that use the Internet to run use Internet Explorer in some way. I believe MSN is one of them. Your problem may be because of 2 things...
  1. A virus. Try running a virus scan.
  2. You might want to try to update Internet Explorer 8 or upgrade to IE 9

Hmm any recommendations on what antivirus to use? I'm currently using Microsoft Security Essentials and I've did scans but nothing shows up.

I've reinstalled my IE 8 several times already, I'm fairly sure it's the updated version.

This is proving to be quite a tough problem to solve...

Try Malwarebytes. When I first ran it on my computer it found many viruses that Security Essentials did not pick up. Also make sure you run a full scan not a quick one.

I've finally got the problem solved! I followed Shadowjk's guide that is bookmarked in this forum and after it restarted, I could access the internet through IE and go on MSN.

Thanks for all your help jacksunny!

I would like to to try this myself. As I am experiencing a related problem.

IE will connect to www.google.com or www.bing.com but other websites won't connect initially. Other browsers can be started and connect to these other website without any problem. After about 5-10 minutes, I can connect using IE.

I wonder what is going on with IE, my default browser? (version 9, 64-bit, MSE anti-virus)

Where is that bookmark?
