IE10 Not Downloading

Just recently, IE 10 has stopped downloading files. I've had various programs that tell me an update is available and when I go to download it I will get the standard box asking if I want to Run or Save but when I click on either of the icons, nothing happens. If I go into IE 10 "Tools" and "View Download" it will show the download with Run and Save but again, clicking on them, nothing happens.

I saw something in another forum that suggested to go into Internet Options, Advanced and do the Reset, while deleting your personal preferences. Doing this ended up with a reboot and it worked, the first time. It stopped working again. Opera has no problems doing the same download so it is IE 10 specific.

Any suggestions?

I think IE10 is still experiencing some compatibility issues on Windows 7. You might see if these prerequisite updates help.

But before trying to install the updates, I'd make sure that any previous installation of IE10 is removed from the computer.

When I go to the "prerequisite link", it talks about the IE 10 Release Preview. What I downloaded 4 days ago is the final release. Do you still think these would be required or would they have been added to the official release?

You then say to Uninstall Internet Explorer and then run SCANNOW 3 times to check for corrupt files and reboot. At that point I create a restore point.

I'm assuming the 2 links that you show are just explanations of restore points.

Now I re-install IE 10 from Windows Update. Should I be installing all of these "prerequisites" before installing IE 10? Should I be trying the Windows Update or the standalone IE10 website version?

As an aside, another problem IE 10 seems to be having (beyond the Google Autofill problem that I mentioned in another thread) is that when I read e-mails in Outlook 2007, images are not being displayed all of the time. On the MSOUTLOOK.INFO website it suggests that IE is not working properly and it should be reset.

I'll try your suggestion (once it's been clarified) but I may go back to IE9 if these things aren't clarified. I'm surprised Microsoft wouldn't know these things (such as prerequisites shown on their website).

I ran this using ie10 and didn't fail from wrong version and it is a quick thing to try,
Try method 6,

But it is wise to Uninstall ie10 and reset ie9 Delete personal settings and Delete all of your browser history/ check all boxes and Uncheck the very top box and then run Method 6.
Depending on what security suite you have installed you might even Uninstall and re-install it using ie10 if it successful,
Google toolbar....are a automatic re-install.

I know there is at least one prerequisite for IE10 called "the evil update". As of a week ago (3/16/13) it apparently hasn't been incorporated into the final IE10 release. And if it's uninstalled, it will be reinstalled without any user action.

I would completely uninstall IE10, run the system file checker scan, and then try reinstalling IE10 from here:

Perhaps this link will provide any necessary prerequisites because it says you may receive the error message "Internet Explorer needs an update before installing". Presumably this installer will check the computer for missing updates.

I went back to IE9.

I ran SCANNOW and the only problems I got were the oft-mentioned TCPMON.INI being corrupted (has been for a long time). This is not the problem.

I did the "personal deletion" (in IE 9) and the 1st download worked but subsequent downloads do not work. When I request a download, nothing happens (no RUN/SAVE/SAVE AS). If I try to "View Downloads", nothing happens. I've tried deleting the download history using "alt/ctrl/shift" and that doesn't correct it.

So it is not a problem with IE 10, unless installing IE 10 corrupted my download folder. I can download with Opera.

If I log on to wife's account, I can download and view downloads in IE 9.

Do I have a corrupted user profile? Will doing a system restore (prior to installation of IE10) correct anything? Will changing the default download directory do anything? Would installing Internet Download Manager get around the problem?

I don't really want to create a new user profile for myself but if I have to I will. I would prefer to get back to the same user name.

If you have a restore point that goes back to before the very first attempt to install IE10, I'd give it a try. If still no joy, you might consider a repair install. A repair install will try to fix your operating system and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers, etc. You'd have to reinstall Windows Updates once the repair install finishes. The repair takes about an hour to run and reinstalling updates would take at least that long.

I tried the restore but I'm getting an error "0X80070005" that it could not access a file and it may be as a result of my antivirus program. I use Bitdefender 2010 Internet Security. I have real-time protection turned off. Don't think anti-phishing or firewall would cause a problem. I'll have to check this out further but it looks like I will have to try the repair install but I'm wondering if this will fix both problems.

The "hidden patch" you refer to. Should that patch be implemented even if my restore ends up working? I only ever update based on Windows Update and seldom install hotfixes individually.

From what I've read, this "hotfix rollup" contains about 90 updates that were released after SP1. If a computer is already up to date then the rollup won't install. But if someone does a repair install or a clean install which would normally require a visit to the Windows Update site, then this rollup would save a lot of time (possibly hours) by not having to download and install individual updates. Just this one rollup patch.
