IE8 and connectivity probs - cable conn.

Hi Folks

Well, reading thru this and many other forums, one problem that seems to be brought up everywhere, everyday, is some sort of Internet connectivity issue with wireless, and some times even wired connections.
Tonite I had my own brush with this issue and wow...what a weird one this is.

I was on this forum as usual and was opening a link to another page on the forum. It suddenly came up with the "Internet Explorer Cannot Display Page" deal. Well I thought it was just a temp server glitch so I went back to the 1st tab and tried again...again the error page. IT also has this nice Diagnose button so I figured I'd try it. It actually came back and said it found a problem, fixed it, and now this page showed up. I did what I had to do and then tried going back to my original tab only to be greeted by that error page, but this time all of my tabs were also displaying that. So again I treied the Diagnose button but now it said No Problem found..but I had no Internet whatsoever. Now comes the struggle

I checked Network & Sharing center and it showed that my Internet connection was up, and I checked the adapter properties and it properly showed my IP addy so it was ok, but no Internet. I tried my AV program to see if it could update and it dd, so FTP was available but http was not connecting.
I reset my adapter and my lease was renewed fine, IP addy was correct so I started IE again but still nothing. Uninstalled and reinstalled network adater, rebooted, tried again and again but nothing was working and all the while the map in Network center showed I was connected and not in a Limited state or anything.

So now I try my modem, reboot it, no good. I even had my ISP guys ping me and they said I was working fine but do you think I could get Internet connection?
Nope.
Even booted into my Vista install to d'load Google Chrome which I used allot in Vista, but it said it's incompatible with W7, but will allow th install to finish and run. It also came back with no connectivity errors. Device Mgr showed my network adapter working properly. I even tried pinging a web site...npoe but I could ping a known FTP server...uhhh..hmmm.

After a couple hours of doing everything I could think of and all the things I've learned over years of doing this stuff...I finally resolved myself to a Sys Restore. I only have 2 days on this install so I picked a point just 3 hours before this issue began, restored, and now I'm back as if nothing happened.
I checked event viewer and was surprised to see about 60 DHCPv6 errors starting right from the second this install was running. While these are perplexing, they can't be the cause since I had them well before the issue arose. It also showed a few Dhcp lease request denials but again not corresponding to the issue timing. In all I have tons of these DHCPv6 and Dhcp errors but they really don't point to this specific problem I believe.

Something simply caused IE8 to lose all connectivity and nothing I know how to do would get it back, except finally a restore, which tells me squat!
It would seem to methat IE8 is messing the network settings somehow, either that or the Win Firewall (which I have to replace) was somehow to blame even tho it said it wasn't.

Surely I will!
I have an inkling that IE8 was the root of the problem since FTP and the network map still worked and showed connectivity, but I can't be certain. Somthing sure changed in a hurry tho and since a sys restore cured it, it has to be in a file type (probably system file) that is monitored by sys restore and repaired.
I thought maybe the tcpip.sys file was corrupted but then FTP shouldn't have worked either...I think. I haven't examined W7's network stack yet but if it happens again I sure will be.

I have had the same problem trying te get IE 8 to connect to the internet, so, after troubleshooting a java installation problem, I discovered why IE 8 wasn't connecting and I have solved the problem [for me at least].

1.Enable proxy settings in Internet Options
Control Panel > Network and Internet > Internet Options > Connections tab > LAN Settings > Click the box "Use a proxy Server for your LAN..."

I don't know if this is the cause of the problem or even if this is a permanent fix.
Also, It puzzles me why IE 8 worked fine when Windows 7 first Installed.

Bizarrely this works for me, after countless hours of trying to diagnose this same problem! I can't accept that this is a "permanent fix" though, because this is consistently causing me an additional problem when I reboot the same system back into Vista. In that case, ironically, Vista is able to solve the problem by resetting the IP connection. There is some sort of bizarre thing going on here that is screwing with something, that even lasts through a reboot into Vista. Again, ironically, Firefox, Windows Update, and a few other things are just fine, but IE and Windows Media Player are totally unable to connect to the Net without this Proxy change described above.

Sorry that I started this post before I rebooted back into Vista to see if that problem disappears, but I can't believe that it will have fixed itself. And yes, I have tracked this problem over and over again, not just a time or two, and it doesn't get hung up if Vista is the only OS run and reboot repeatedly. I just can't conceive of a cross-OS corruption like this! Nor will I accept that telling IE and WMP to use a dummy proxy is a real answer.

In case you're interested, I have an Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card in an HP laptop. Never had a lick of trouble out of it. But this corruption being caused doesn't extend across my local wireless network to other computers connecting to this wireless router.

Finally, I, too, did NOT see this immediately after Windows 7 was installed. That leads me to believe that either one of the patches installed, or one of the software packages I put on here (or their patches) may be doing this. I've got the Norton 360 Beta going, and have had MANY problems with it, too. Plus, I've installed Visual Studio 2005 (with the appropriate Vista patches/SP to make it work under Vista). It would be interesting to know if those programs are in common with others seeing this problem. I suspect Norton 360 Beta may be the culprit, given its instability.

I had the same problem and was going insane. cbstatix solution fixed it for me too. I tried almost everything before reading this.

It was the same for me worked ordinary for days and then one day it wouldnt show web pages.

I really wonder what the problem is. Would be nice to find out

I had kaspersky win7 beta installed but I installed that the first day. It still worked.

I experienced the same IE8 issues today ...... and IE would just stop responding. I installed firefox an havent had any issues yet (fingers crossed) I had a linksys wireless usb adapter and had alot of connectivity issues (even with the driver Windows update gave me) I decided to go wired... havent lost connection but IE either doesnt load webpages or it stops responding all together. Giving Firefox a try to see if errors still happen,

isnt Beta fun!

I just had the same exact problem. I was browsing no where special and all the sudden no internet at all. And it said I was connected! Nothing would connect either. No messengers no nothing! My other computers were still connected also. Nothing I tried would get it to work again. I ended up changing my Lan proxy setting which seemed to have fixed the problem. sfc/scannow showed no problems.

Edit: I believe I may have fixed this by just opening up the X64 version and turning off the proxy server settings which somehow fixed this problem. I don't need to have the proxy turned on in either version and they both work again without it. I'am not sure what the actual fix was but messing with the settings in the 64 bit version of Explorer fixed it for me.

Well, I know IE8 is still buggier than other areas of W7, and I still have some issues connecting to sites at times. MS knows they have work to do with IE8, I have read where some MS engineers have posted about it's shortcomings and how hard they're trying to get it fixed.
I'm glad that Proxy fix has been a workaround for you guys, I'll have to check this out next time this happens.

Still, I'm impressed with IE8 and I hope they get it stable in the next build.

Yes it does have it's bugs that is for sure. The vanishing favicon deal drives me insane and it also locks up quite easily. I have a feeling they are mostly related to the built in security which seems to be crippling an otherwise good browser.

The proxy work around worked for me but once I opened up the 64 bit Explorer version and played with the settings it somehow fixed both Explorer versions for me so I don't need the proxy server enabled any longer. :huh:

I've seen others report that they have lost all cookies but when it happened to me, I found that it's just the data inside that disappears, not actually the cookie "file" itself. Weird

I have windows 7 installed on 3 completely different pcs and it has happened now on all 3.. And it happened in the order I installed windows 7 on those computers. It seems after a specific time of having windows 7 it just stops working and you have to check the proxy setting in IE

This is a really big bug :/

Yes I have had the full gauntlet of IE problems from vanishing favicons to vanishing sign-in cookies to vanishing HD viewers. Not to mention a bunch of other problems like lock ups and unreadable text when scrolling in certain forums including this one, on and on and on.

In fact, this is without a doubt THE worst version of Explorer I have ever used. Excuse me for being blunt but that last statement has never been more true.:huh:

I'am not exagerating one bit either and I have used them all over the years. I can't believe they even released build 7000 with so many obvious bugs in Explorer. I mean did they ever even try to use it first I wonder?

I want to upgrade to build 7032 because it includes fixes for Explorer that are badly needed. I just can't seem to find 7032 on a torrent site that isn't trying to charge for it yet.

As for the Explorer making the entire computer go offline,the fix for this was.... I just went into the 64 bit version of Explorer and turned off the proxy setting in it. After that I didn't need to have the proxy checked any more in the 32 bit version in order to be online again. The problem simply went away after changing the setting in the 64 bit version of Explorer. It's obviously another bug.

And it will probably be on windows update soon as it is on torrent sites today.

And this problem is probably bound to windows 7 as I havent experianced it with IE8 beta on any other windows

Actually the 7022 is 32 bit only and the 7032 is basically the 64 bit version of 7022. Also this problem is related to the "new" Explorer version and not Windows 7. In fact on the list of improvments for the build 7022 and 7032, Explorer is listed as being a "fixed" version. This is why I'am trying to obtain the 7032 because I use 64 bit and it has fixes for Explorer which are badly needed.

As is,the 7022 is easy to find but the 7032 is much more difficult to obtain and seems to be only on the "pay" $4.87 cents times millions........Torrent sites for now.

I agree that the Explorer version used in Vista had none of the problems described by me. But that is a completely different version of Explorer.

I was hoping that windows updates would take care of these problems but so far no luck.

i have the same damn problem.. after upgrading from 7000 to 7057 .. only skype works...

just installed the 7068 and the same problem exists... tried the proxy thing and remains the same!

any ideas?
