I don't know for sure but i would think you have a virus.i have never known a password to expire. I think if i saw that on my PC i would use a CD or DVD Rescue disk. Something like the Comodo rescue Disk Boot from the CD/DVD & let it scan for a virus.it looks like one of them ransom ones to me. I don't know for sure but if it happened to me that is what i would do

You're welcome!

Well, it could still be caused by malware but the OP should check this first.

It's impossible to be aware of all Tutorials on this great site because there's so many :) A tip: go to the Tutorial section of this site and do a search. Or use a custom Google search:

password expired site:sevenforums.com/tutorials

adding site:sevenforums.com/tutorials will only show results from that site. Very useful!

Hi
Thanks for the replies. I tried Tookeri's Password Expiration - Enable or Disable option but I cant get to command prompt.

I restarted my computer, pressed F8 and when I chose 'safe mode with command prompt' , it went back to the screen a posted http://www3.telus.net/m1000/passwordlocked2.JPG

I restarted my computer, pressed F11, and it went to system restore. I tried 'restore point' but that didnt work. It went to the photo above

I tried restarting again and pressed F2 and it went to this http://www3.telus.net/m1000/password3.JPG

I didnt know what to do from there.

I really dont want to go to factory settings if I can avoid it

I looked through other solutions as Tookeri suggested but no luck

I go to command prompt but it shows up as the 'password' screen from my original message

Mark

There is just one more i can think of and it is the HITMAN PRO with KICKSTART, it will boot up your machine into windows bypassin everything else & give you a set of tools to use that are meant to be familiar to everyone,i have never used it but i keep it on a flash drive just in case. you can read about it here:
HitmanPro.Kickstart - Anti ransomware, politievirus, bundestrojaner, Reveton, BKA, GVU - SurfRight

HitmanPro.Kickstart - Anti ransomware, politievirus, bundestrojaner, Reveton, BKA, GVU - SurfRight

it did not seem to show the URL properly

I just thought. if you do use the Hitman Pro with Kickstart you might need to make sure you set in your BIOS for it to boot from USB Flash Drive, i have a sony vaio & it will just do it, I also have a Toshiba That will not Boot from USB unless you put the USB to the top of the boot order list.

You could try this, but I'm not sure if it'll work under these circumstances. Even if you reset the password you might still get this prompt.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/85657-password-reset.html

Im not sure what to do on that link.

(This is copied from from the link . . . )
(Windows 7) System Repair Disc - Create

Let's get Started!

1) The Boot Priority in the BIOS needs to be set to boot first from the optical drive; insert your Windows disk and re-start the PC.

- Am I suppose to create system repair disc?
- Do I do the boot priority?
- Does the win 7 system repair disc lead to the boot priority direction?

By the way, my other computer in a laptop with Windows 8

Thanks
Mark

You need either a Windows installation disc or a system repair disc. If you don't have either you can create a system repair disc on another PC but it has to be on a Win 7. I think it has to be 64-bit too if that's what you have.

The boot priority may already be set to CD/DVD. Try and find out. If it doesn't boot the CD then you need to change that in BIOS. Hopefully you won't have to do that.

And the follow the rest of the Tutorial carefully as it involves making manual changes in the registry. Double check every step so you're sure you get everything right.

I read your posts one more time and I can't see you've mentioned what happens if you click OK at this prompt, and enter your current password and a new password. Have you tried that? Does it give you an error? Or don't you want to try that?

Tookeri,
I found the index card I had written on the password for Windows password. http://www3.telus.net/m1000/password_windows_01.jpg
I entered that password and then a password Ive never used (truck2000) in the new password field. It didnt work.
I tried other older passwords I have used and that didnt work either.

My question:
Will the system repair disc that I make erase my data?

Greg,
I will try your suggestion later today. Thanks

No. The disc can only be used to boot from. And when you do that you'll get options for what you want to do. So it's up to the user to decide how to use it. Just follow every step in the tutorial carefully.

But as I've said before, I'm not sure if this will work. It's a little gambling. If your computer was working before and this suddenly happened without you ever enabling password expiration, then there's a risk that malware is involved.

I've not seen the password reset screen at bootup before but unless someone can confirm it's legit I'd scan for malware from a boot disk first just to be sure: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219533-troubleshooting-windows-7-failure-boot.html

If clean then try System Restore and Startup Repair from disk http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html. If necessary do the Password Reset.

I did both options - malwarebytes and Windows Defender Offline - that was on the link that Greg posted)
Malwarebytes didnt work.

1. If possible unplug all other HD's while checking all cable connections. Boot into BIOS setup by tapping the key given for this on first boot screen, check that Windows 7 HD is detected and set to boot first (after CD/DVD drive).

2. Try booting into Safe Mode with Networking to install, update and run a full scan with Malwarebytes.

3. If Safe Mode is not working, download, burn to CD or write to flash stick, boot the disk and run a full scan with Windows Defender Offline. If it fails try one of these FREE Bootable AntiVirus Rescue CDs burned to CD using Windows Image Burner or ImgBurn. You can also move the HD to another PC to scan it with Malwarebyte

My usb was recognised when I used defender offline but it didnt work.

Thank you for the continued help.
Ill try the system repair disk when I get it from my sister
