Imaging with free Macrium

This tutorial shows imaging with free Macrium Version 5.0. If you are still using Macrium Version 4.2, go to this Vimeo site where the tutorial of that version is stored.

The Video does not show the recovery part because I have no setup to screen capture it. But Keith (Kado) made this excellent recovery tutorial with text (but no sound) that he captured from a virtual partition.

   Warning

Note that the external disk to which you image must be formatted in NTFS. A disk that is formatted in Fat32 will accept an image, but the recovery programs cannot restore that image. You can, however, mount (open) a Fat32 image as VHD.

   Note

The production of the WinPE recovery CD (which is highly recommended) may take up to 3 hours because Macrium needs to download the 1.7GB WAIK (Windows Application Installation Kit). For your convenience I have uploaded a ready made .iso of the WinPE recovery disc. That can be downloaded in appr. 8 minutes which clearly beats the WAIK download. Once you downloaded and unzipped the folder, you can burn it directly to a CD with e.g. ImgBurn.

I draw your attention to the fact that this WinPE CD can also be used to make images. That may be convenient in case you do not want to install Macrium on your PC.

This video tutorial explains the full cycle of the imaging process which is:

The imaging program that was used for this tutorial is free Macrium. But the basic principles are the same for other imaging programs although the user interface will be different.

This video runs for appr. 7 minutes.

Note: If you have a problem with the loudness of the sound output of the video, check the "Loudness Equalization" box in your Playback device. It is under the 'Enhancements' tab.

I've had a similar notification from Google also from California. I don't think Seven Forums is based in the US anyway.

Is that particular download specific to a particular version of Macrium, or can it be used with all versions ?
The version I have stored in a folder (not yet installed) is 6.0.553.0; will this cd work with that version ?

No those ISOs are for version 5 they will not work with images created with V6. You will need to create the recovery media yourself. That ISO was created to save the user doing a 1.7GB download of the WAIK. That is no longer needed the download is much smaller now.

It will be automatically downloaded when you create your first recovery disk. The first button on the toolbar does this. You may even be prompted to do it when you install MR. I think the install procedure has changed to do this now.

I've been using DVD's for back-ups but want to go to an external HDD, has anyone had experience using Macrium and an external HDD for back-ups?

I'm looking at a WD My passport, do I need to install all the WD programs or just the drivers for the HDD to make it work with my 7box and then have Macrium use it as a destination drive?

If that's the case I also have two win10 laptops that I'd then have to install the drivers onto for backing them up.

I've been using Macrium v4.2 on this machine but with getting a new external HDD I believe I should move up to v6.3.1745 I understand that making this move I would have to create new rescue disks.

Thoughts, pitfalls to look out for?

Hi,
Unless you have a deep desire to encrypt or encryption I'd personally stick with a basic enclosure and buying separate hdd's to put in it
Most of these passport..... all they do is fail taking the data with them

I personally would stay away from Passport because of the encryption.

If the circuit board has a fart you can't get your data.
Sometimes 'WD' can, but that is a hit and miss.

Thanks guys you've given me more to think about. I was thinking of using my ol' XP case and 1TB drive in it and just network the back-up to it, it has an extra two 3.5" bays.

I personally don't want my backup drive hooked up when not in use.
Ransomware could also attack the back up drive if it is hooked up.

I only have my backup or clone drive hooked up when making or when using.
Then I unhook them and store in safe place.

Personally mate I would just use an external and if you what t encrypt it then use a program to do that I have tired using internal drives for imaging and stuff but have had more grief then anything.

Yep internal or external I believe internal is allot faster but more difficult to disconnect the backup drive
