Imaging with free Macrium

   Information

This tutorial shows imaging with free Macrium Version 5.0. If you are still using Macrium Version 4.2, go to this Vimeo site where the tutorial of that version is stored.

The Video does not show the recovery part because I have no setup to screen capture it. But Keith (Kado) made this excellent recovery tutorial with text (but no sound) that he captured from a virtual partition.

   Warning

Note that the external disk to which you image must be formatted in NTFS. A disk that is formatted in Fat32 will accept an image, but the recovery programs cannot restore that image. You can, however, mount (open) a Fat32 image as VHD.

   Note

The production of the WinPE recovery CD (which is highly recommended) may take up to 3 hours because Macrium needs to download the 1.7GB WAIK (Windows Application Installation Kit). For your convenience I have uploaded a ready made .iso of the WinPE recovery disc. That can be downloaded in appr. 8 minutes which clearly beats the WAIK download. Once you downloaded and unzipped the folder, you can burn it directly to a CD with e.g. ImgBurn.

I draw your attention to the fact that this WinPE CD can also be used to make images. That may be convenient in case you do not want to install Macrium on your PC.

The imaging program that was used for this tutorial is free Macrium. But the basic principles are the same for other imaging programs although the user interface will be different.

This video runs for appr. 7 minutes.

Besides being beautiful, what's fascinating is 1/7th of each one is underwater. Those puppies can be HUGE!

I assume you meant only 1/7th of each one is over the surface, not underwater. To be exact, 91.7% of an iceberg's mass is underwater.

From The Physics of Everyday Stuff - Icebergs:

The weight of an object is given by its mass times the acceleration of gravity, g = 9.8 m/s²:

W = Mg

The iceberg has weight Wi = Mig and the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the displaced water, Ww = Mwg. Furthermore, since the iceberg is floating, its weight exactly balances the buoyant force:
Ww = Wi
Mwg = Mig
Vwwg = Viig
Vw = i/w Vi

So, the fraction of ice underwater, Vw/Vi, is given by the ratio of densities i/w=0.917. Over 90% of an iceberg's volume (and mass) is underwater.

i've seen a glacier calving small bergs from a few hundred yards away in a MLB, and we were thrown about the waves it generated. they're very impressive when the do that. equally impressive is grinding your way thru 10 ft of ice in the polar seas on an icebreaker with nothing else but white as far as you can see, except the occasional yellowed polar bear and possibly with him a splash of red and black seal.

But I am going to try the Ubuntu method I mentioned earlier as it has been really good at getting data off even "dead" drives.

Wolfgang somehow my Microsoft account which I find so difficutlt to understand has got mucke up and I cannot login to view One Drive now so that version of MATE is it this one Download - Linux Mint the edition that says it includes the desktop please??

Wolfgang I have got to making the partition and in Computer > drive letter I see the Linux listed and yet in Partition Wizard I see nothing - see pics I have added all which are relevant.

When I was going through the process I did have a little window to say that it would not be bootable and I don't know what that was all about because I hit OK and it continued on.

So I think I may have done something wrong but what??

Ah my mistake Wolfgang I didn't move that slider I will reformat that drive using PW to make it FAT32 as it came up as exFAT (Default) or something like that with the Windows feature - then I will reinstall that Linux on it - sorry and thanks for the heads up.

You don't have to reformat it. Just check that box where the arrow points and it will be formatted. That's the better solution.

PS - if you don't hear from me for a while, I am going to bed. It is past 1AM.

Ok mate I did that and the "install" stalls at what you see in the pic - have tried it twice now and it just stops at where I indicate. The boxes at the bottom you can see are greyed out??
