Imaging with free Macrium

   Information

This tutorial shows imaging with free Macrium Version 5.0. If you are still using Macrium Version 4.2, go to this Vimeo site where the tutorial of that version is stored.

The Video does not show the recovery part because I have no setup to screen capture it. But Keith (Kado) made this excellent recovery tutorial with text (but no sound) that he captured from a virtual partition.

   Warning

Note that the external disk to which you image must be formatted in NTFS. A disk that is formatted in Fat32 will accept an image, but the recovery programs cannot restore that image. You can, however, mount (open) a Fat32 image as VHD.

   Note

The production of the WinPE recovery CD (which is highly recommended) may take up to 3 hours because Macrium needs to download the 1.7GB WAIK (Windows Application Installation Kit). For your convenience I have uploaded a ready made .iso of the WinPE recovery disc. That can be downloaded in appr. 8 minutes which clearly beats the WAIK download. Once you downloaded and unzipped the folder, you can burn it directly to a CD with e.g. ImgBurn.

I draw your attention to the fact that this WinPE CD can also be used to make images. That may be convenient in case you do not want to install Macrium on your PC.

The imaging program that was used for this tutorial is free Macrium. But the basic principles are the same for other imaging programs although the user interface will be different.

This video runs for appr. 7 minutes.

Jack, I have been in many big cities and people are usually tougher there than in the countryside. NY is no different in that regard than e.g. Paris, Berlin or Vienna. Only in Rome I found people to be very pleasant.

As far as big and small towns and cities, I've found the people in smaller towns and cities in Texas can be pretty vicious (and the larger populations aren't much better). Elsewhere (other than Blight), population size doesn't seem to matter.

Hello, I just got a Sager laptop with 1920x1080 screen. When I start the WinPE disk the loading bar is way off to the side and then it doesn't load. Is this a screen issue?

if you use a paid version, can you use a v5 image on v6? lm especially interested in the redeploy feature, if l upgrade hardware/motherboard it will be pretty useful not having to go through the annoyance of reinstalling.

Paid or free. The images are compatible across releases.

From what I've read, you can use V5 images on V6 but not V6 images on V5.

cheers, might get myself a licence as the redeploy feature could come in pretty useful if l upgrade my motherboard in the future.. however considering l reinstall once a year using an image to refresh my system will save work leaving me with only windows updates to install, then just create a new image afterwards to update it...

Hmm well a few years - well quite a few years ago I used to work as a bus conductor in a large seaside town on the south coast of England and I found a great deal of difference in the attitudes of different nationalities - mind you a lot were students on holidays but I found in general that the Scandinavian folks were the most polite, courteous and far less Anglo phobic of anyone I came into contact with.

I don't think it is right to discuss here what I think of the other individual nationalities because my attitude/s have been changed a great deal from those times to the present by just being on this forum for instance - if you want my honest opinion. But suffice for this thread some in the past were downright obnoxious.

north americans also tend to queue and maintain lines. we also expect visiting people from other countries to do so. cutting in ahead of someone is considered a sin of biblical proportions & might get you injured. in some places in the USA it might get you shot.

i worked in saudi arabia for a while. they do NOT queue, everything is a mad dash en mass and women and children are last. some govt. agencies and banks however force you to queue, but if you know someone you can jump the line completely. as i found out after a frustrating day trying unsuccessfully to register & license my private car. i mentioned it to my saudi work-mate. next day we we went together, he spoke to his father's cousin's buddy in the license bureau, we had tea, he then walked us past the queue & we were in & out, with reg in a few minutes.

saudis do not queue at traffic lights either. westerners dutifully line up serially waiting for the green light. saudis line up in parallel and use the green light as a signal to burn rubber to get ahead of everyone else. saudis put model year stickers about 6 in. high on the rear of their cars so the person behind them will know how old their car is. this is because they feel the newest car has a right to be first so they can pass an older car whenever they want. even in the face of oncoming traffic. or red lights. if they get smooshed, it was the will of allah.

if you, a westerner, or other foreigner, get hit by a saudi, however, it will most likely be YOU who is judged at fault. usually you will be told that if you had not been in the country the accident would not have happened.

i was involved in a traffic accident there once. wife & son in car going to a friends house for dinner, we were stopped at a traffic light, a saudi with his son and sheep in the car rammed into the car behind us which rammed into me, bounced off & hit another in the next lane, then hit me again. he said his brakes failed. all the passengers got out & disappeared, they would take buses home to avoid being held by the police as witnesses. normal procedure is to haul everyone involved to jail until it is all straightened out, witnesses included. anyhow, turned out the car behind me was a government vehicle from the local airbase (driven by two brits). the car tom my side was a saudi army jeep. so, it obviously could not be their fault, it must be the civilian's. as i had the two faultless govt. vehicles between me and the perpetrator, so it also wasn't my fault. the saudi civilian driver (the son) went to jail. don't know what happened to the father or the sheep. i suspect he was dinner. (the sheep, not the fater). the son stayed in jail till he paid for all the damage. i was allowed to go home after my company govt. affairs agent came down to handle the police. i got called a couple days later to go down to his uncle's business, where his uncle of course served tea, i showed him the repair estimates (3) then he opened his desk drawer, pulled out a chunk of bank banded money & counted out my repair costs in crisp new saudi 100 riyal notes. i signed for it so his nephew could get out of jail.

Yes what gives me the trots is the way first and business class are let on and off planes and as for the Saudis I suppose they have the cash so I reckon they have paid for that privilege which although they have still annoys the crap out of me.

There's a thought. I'm not far from needing a cane although, right now, I feel like I need a stretcher. I've been pulling TV antenna cable. What a "chore" (I would be more descriptive but Mama told me not to use those words and Brink would have a cow)!

Yes well am not telling a lie but tell them you are diabetic and you always get served first - food is not that different from anyone else but it does save that wait

As for anything really physical these days my wrecked shoulder stops me form doing my woodwork, riding a a bike (powered of course) and a lot of house maintenance

Dang! We all are falling apart at the seams. I knocked off at noon today and just ran a few quick errands after that (including eating out). Tomorrow, I'm crawling up the ladder again to terminate the two cables hanging out from under the trim at the top of my mobile home wall, hook up a splitter, then test the new amplified antenna at ground level to make sure it works before crawling up onto the roof to swap out antennas.

Right now, I feel like I've been beaten with a 2x4 but that is an improvement over how I felt Monday and yesterday from the work I did Sunday. I learned my lesson after Sunday and now just work for no more than half an hour to an hour at a time, then take a break at least as long before starting on more work. I figure one or two more days to finish the job and two or three days to recover. What bites my ample asset is, ten years ago, I could have done the entire job in one or two days instead of almost a week without any pain.
