Solved Import Favourites/Bookmarks from a dead Vista system

My Vista machine died completely.
There are full disk backups on an external drive and most 'User' folders online - both with Acronis.
Is there any way I can restore/import my 'old' Bookmarks & Favourites (whatever the difference is) into this new I.E.11 when I no longer have a Vista system to export them from? The backups, both external & online, appear to have the individual entries with an extension of .url which is what they have when I restore them from online. Pointing the Import function in I.E 11 to these does not work, no doubt understandably.
Favourites are individual entries under my old Vista id in Users.
Bookmark folders, with groups of individual entries, are in Favourites/Microsoft Websites/Bookmarks.
I will sort this mess out once/if I can import them.
Any assistance will be appreciated even if it means shuffling them from one browser to another.

Welcome.

The Favorites for IE are stored in the Favorites folder here in Windows VISTA, Windows 7, or 8:

C:\Users\>your user name>\Favorites

All I have ever needed to do was copy the contents of one Favorites folder, VISTA for example, to the new Favorites folder, Windows 7.

Many thanks for this.
One question - does this mean literally just copy? If so, what is the point of the export/import functions if a straight copy gets the job done easier?

Yes you can just copy.

The export function puts the Favorites that you choose into a single file which can then be imported to a new installation.
These functions must be run from the IE browser.

Just one tip - if you copy/paste those into the Favorites folder of your new system, you will get duplicates for all where you already have the same bookmark in the new system. So you may want to watch that.
