I am completely at my wits end with this problem.
I upgraded for free to Windows 10 from WIndows 7, I thought "Hey, good reviews, positive info out there, lets give it a shot." I was adamantly opposed to Win8 and Windows has had a track record in my mind that they do one good OS, one bad, one good, etc. So, that was my biggest mistake. I hate the programs being called "apps" and the general dumbing down of my PC to be more like a tablet, I could get past that though. The dealbreaker was a repeating audio/video stutter issue that I tried everything to fix. So I am going back to 7.
Here is where my headache really begins.
I first did a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. After fighting with this for a day (same problem I am having now, will discuss shortly) I gave up and went to Win 7 Ultimate 64 as I have had better luck with it.
So now, everything goes well, get the install done, drivers all set up, and I go to do my Windows Updates. The first 50 or so go swimmingly, no issues and done. Then Windows informs me that I need to download a new Updater package to continue. All of this is in the Windows update GUI mind you, not some popup or whatever. I do so, and then I could just die. What happens now is that it sticks on Checking for Updates and never stops. I left it on overnight checking for those updates and nothing.
I did some digging for already posted help and here is what I have tried and what responses I get.
-Windows Readiness Tool - It sticks forever on Checking For Updates and never goes anywhere
-Windows Fixit Tool - Says it fixed it - It didn't
-Windows Update diagnosis tool - It says it resolved the issue
-Followed the restarting services method for windows update, cryptography, software distribution, and background - it worked once but all i got was to the actual downloading updates screen and it hung there forever
-I have done fresh clean installs of 2 different versions of Windows 7 twice each to no avail.
-Turned off then back on checking for updates manually/automatic - no love, my default for this is check for updates and ask me to download/install
I don't know what else to do at this point. My tech level is probably an 8 of 10, I am no programmer but I know my way around windows enough to have never had to ask for help before today, so I humble myself before you and beseech you to help me fix this problem!
