Info on Kingmax SSD

I can now get a 240GB SSD for $139 but it is a brand I haven't come across before and have had a look but can only find the usual sales pitch stuff. So does anyone know anything about this brand please??

KingMax does make some good memory card products, this ssd has a Silicon Motion SM2246 controller with Micron 20nm MLC NAND, reviews are fairly good. Good price, I know prices are a LOT higher down under. I send stuff to my daughter all the time as it's much cheaper for her. It's got a 3 year warranty, go for it.

Thanks Gary I was sort of reviewing Lynne's build when I saw that there were several around the $139 - $159 mark but I had originally had saved that EVO you linked as my choice but if this Kingmax is ok then I might just give it a whirl

ICit2lol. I have a Kingmax SMP35 Client 240Gb. I had used it for a while & then decided to update the firmware, which resulted in it failing to boot. After a lot of fiddling & enlisting professional help it would boot from a cold start, but would not reboot from a restart. So I would have to shut down & manually restart if a restart was required.

Since then I have replaced it with a Samsung Pro, which I am very happy with. Recently I formatted the Kingmax hoping to be able to use it as a backup disc, but now the BIOS will not recognise it at all. It seems that there is some damage to some sectors or something. I have emailed Kingmax support but never received a reply.

If you do get one don't update the firmware.

Well I guess reviews can be misleading. I don't recognize the controller the Kingmax uses either.

Ok well I might just give it a miss for the EVO or the Crucial M500 or even the SanDisk X110 as it is going to be a general use machine and will not need to be super fast.

Yup, I think any of the 3 should do well, I didn't look at all but Samsung and Crucial both have 3 year warranties too.

Thanks mate I might even go the SanDisk as I have one in the laptop (plain Extreme) that has been really very good but I do prefer the Samsung or the Crucial over it as I have both of them as well
