Installation Crashes

I can't work out what you mean by "Install in safe mode", but nothing I tried worked.

The only .dmp files in my system are an empty, 0 byte "MEMORY.dmp", a couple of small files in my uTorrent system folder and a few somewhere in my Firefox Application Data folder, none of which I think are what you're looking for.

I don't see me getting hold of a different CPU any time soon, either.

It's not the ISO - I've installed it from the same disc (same version, too - x64 Home Premium), onto my laptop, and it's running fine. I'm actually posting from it right now.

Do you mean going into Safe Mode in XP and installing from there, or trying to install as usual, and then booting up into Safe Mode? As for the latter, I think it's unlikely I'll be able to manage to successfully install it. Also, it doesn't appear to crash in the same place each time.

I decided to do MS's Win7 upgrade advisor, and it came up fine, aside from saying I'll need to get new drivers for my X-Fi and Wireless Card, it said "An update is required to make this device compatible with Windows 7", about the Gigabyte GBB36X Controller. It said the same for the X-Fi and the Wi-Fi card; I'm not sure what that controller does, though, and if it's significant.

You know you never mentioned the RAID. Its often a problem in win 7. try unplugging the raid and see what happens

Might also want to put it in your sys specs for the future

Try to boot from the installation disc and at the "Press any key to start from DVD / CD" press and hold F8. It should bring you to the startup screen and there you can select safe mode or the option to record a log file. It will list all the drivers as they install and you shuld see where it stops.

I don't know, to be honest, I didn't know if it was something for the chipset or something. I don't know much about motherboards and their controllers, or RAID, to be honest.

Safe Mode boot - stuck at ..\DRIVERS\disk.sys for a while, but continued after a while. Went into installation as usual and then same issue.

Where would I go to view the log of an installation (obviously with logging enabled).

Also, just incase there was an issue like my 320GB was in RAID 0 (not much idea about this), I tried disconnecting it and just installed onto a partition on my C:, with no change.

I got the logo when doing a clean install and the bar when upgrading (in my case from Vista). Was it an upgrade in both cases?

None of these are upgrades in the sense of retaining programs - I don't think it's even possible to upgrade from XP, but some of these installations are started from within XP, followed by a restart whereupon it attempts to complete the installation. Others are from the boot disc. Either way the results seem the same. Though no matter where its started, the nvidia card has the bar, the ati has the logo (though I'm not implying the make is the reason).

What I can suggest is this:

1. Unplug SATA HardDisk
2. Run installation from USB (pressing f12 boot menu> HDD>WHATEVER USB NAME Drive)

From What I know, '7' creates a drive name ' X: ' as a dump during the installation process.

If that fails to work, perhaps you may wish to provide the Model of your Gigabyte Mainboard to ascertain if you are using IT 8212 SATA/ RAID controller.

If you are indeed using that controller, you can look for 1.7.2.9 version of it on the net.

You can load the driver at the screen where you select HDD for '7' to install in, during the installation progress.

I made a mistake in my specs which I think is now fixed - just that the motherboard is the GA P35C-DS3R, but I put the GA P35-DS3R.

I tried an installation with logging, which says it writes to ntbtlog.txt, but the only file by that name I could find was under my current C:\WINDOWS, and appears to refer to my current installation, as there are mentions of drivers installed on XP but that I obviously haven't put on 7.

Hi Davik,

1. You may wish to power down your PC (shut off the main; it never hurts to be careful)

2. Disconnect the SATA drive.

3. Boot up, head into BIOS.

4. Disable your AHCI / SATA Raid

5. Leave the option for PATA /IDE option to 'Auto'

6. F10> 'y'

7. System starts up, press F12

8. Boot into USB Drive.

9. Install Windows 7 on the IDE drive.

10. If you are able to get the installation down and boot into '7' successfully, congrates

11. If not, you may wish to try the drivers located here: Icrontic » Intel chipset drivers for Windows 7 have arrived

It's the latest from February 09.

From what I see on the Main Gigabyte site: GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - Driver - GA-P35C-DS3R (rev. 1.x) ; I am unable to see any ICH9R updates dated year 09'. You may wish to grab the latest drivers to help you out.

Also, it would help if you can boot into you current OS and check what type of controller for HDD are you using and try to find the latest version, if the previous link doesn't match your own set.

Please report success or failure so that I think up of what to help you next.

Here's what I would try.

Low level format the 320GB hdd using a tool from UBCD or something.

Try to install windows 7 on it. When it asks you where you want to install , obviously you choose the 320 but don't create any partitions, just format and install. ( Disconnect your 80GB )

I wish I could do that, TGSoldier, but I need to keep a lot of the program data that's on the 320GB to use with my XP install, until I can ensure a succesful Windows 7 installation, to continue using for work.

I'm currently trying the driver updates, though I'm not sure whether I should be trying these now, or at the Partition Selection point in the Win7 installation process.

Also, how do I found out what type of hard drive controller I am using?

I would disable the serial and parallel ports too, just in case.

Installing with just the 80GB drive connected didn't work.

I disabled the Parallel and Serial Ports, no change.

I installed the intel chipset drivers from XP, with no change.

I'm not really sure when or which of these drivers I should be installing, and whether I should have the SATA drive connected or not.

I'll get back to you tomorrow, going out now.
