Installation error - Build 7000

Specs:
e6600 2.4ghz
500GB HDD
2 GB RAM

Windows XP Pro

Mounted .iso image and proceeded to do a clean install, got till the end of the installation and an error saying: "Windows could not update registry data in the installation" popped up and reverted my setup back to Windows XP.

I don't have DVD burner so I don't have the option of burning the .iso to a DVD.

I tried setting up a dif. partition thru PartitionMagic but was not able to...

Found this post related to a Vista installation:

I got the message "Windows could not update registry data in the installation." on several attempts to upgrade Vista. Each time, I uninstalled more software (including parts of IIS that caused some other folks trouble).

I also checked my event logs (using eventvwr.exe) and cleaned up problems reported there until no more errors were being logged.

Then I found the file C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err had some useful info. An error message there suggested trouble with the HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices key in the registry.

I cleaned out some old entries from there, rebooted, and tried the upgrade again. This time it worked (although it appeared to freeze a couple of times toward the end, requiring a hard reboot -- scary stuff).

If you want to try cleaning up the MountedDevices key, read up on it first to avoid causing more problems, and save the existing data there first. I kept the \DosDevices entries and \??\Volume entries for my floppy and hard drives (A:, C:, F and removed all the other entries. On reboot, Windows rebuilt the entries for my CD and DVD drives.

Hi Albert,

That link could well be right. A clean install will be a better bet.
You may need to create a partition and format to NTFS before you begin to install 7. How come you couldn't create another partition - any error messages?

Clearing out the old MountedDevices registry keys WORKED!

I'm posting this via my laptop, but the Windows 7 booted successfully...

I'm having the same problem for the past 2 days or so, installed the windows quite a few times, but having the same error time and time again

Please help...... I can't boot from the CD as well, the CD isn't bootable

Type regedit in run via the start menu.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Navigate to SYSTEM
Navigate to MountedDevices
Delete all entries except for the /DosDevices entry pertaining to your main hard drive.
Install!

I was experiencing the same exact problem during a win7pro upgrade from vista biz, and this solution worked for me as well.
