Downloaded a Windows 7 icon file of about 500 icons. The download came as a rar file. How do I install the file and where do I install it to? I wish to change an icon for a desktop shortcut and wanted to add these new icons to choose from. Please be very detailed.

Thanks in advance.
Robert

Just right click on the rar, select Extract to folder, that'll unzip the icons to the folder of your choice (it can be anywhere). To change the desktop shortcut icon, heres a detailed pictorial tutorial (dont worry about the vista in the title).

Thanks. That helps a lot. Unfortunately the icons were in png format and I will simply search for ico type files to more easily use.

Cordially,

PS: I had to download an rar extractor program as I did not get the "Extract to Folder" option on the drop down when I right clicked on the file.

Go here: ConvertIcon! it will convert .png to .ico for you. Don't forget to choose 256x256 You can try 7-Zip, it's a great and free program for extracting zipped files.
cheers

Thanks. I had found 7 Zip and used that. great minds must think alike.

I also that converter site and it works for individual icons. Yet, also it indicated after a conversion that something was wrong with the icon in question. I wanted to convert the whole series of 500 icons.

I may bag the whole file of 500+ icons in png format, and find others in ico format that are easier to use.

Thanks for your help.
