Just to make sure I didn't have a bad dowload file, I re-downloaded and reinstalled for same results.

In situations such as this I like to give my generic I-don't-know-the-answer-but-this-always-works reply: Have you tried a Repair Install?

I haven't tried this yet. Was hoping I might avoid this as I have never had to do before (and therefore a little uneasy about the process) and I need to have a chunk of quiet time that I can set aside for this (which I won't have until next week). I was also hoping that there might ultimately be an explanation. But, given the amount time that several experts have given to this issue I am guessing that it may just be inexplicable and that a repair install is my best option.

Jonathan - thank you for providing the link to the repair instructions. I am sure this is a very basic question but I did not get windows media with my laptop. I did create recovery and boot disks - is this basically what I need?

If you got the installation media (usually a DVD) with your laptop, you can do a Repair Install. The installation media differs from Windows media player, note.

See if you can borrow one from a friend who has the same OS. Or contact the computer manufacturer, and if that does not work, you can order the media from MS for the cost of the shipping.

Success finally. Restored laptop back to factory settings and then added programs back on. MSE was the second thing I installed after Windows updates. Installed and ran without a problem. I've added back most of my other programs at this point and reloaded my data from a backup. So far no problems. I should note that I do not have any other antivirus software loaded on at this point.

While this issue has been resolved, another has cropped up. I am unable to configure my restore points. I am trying to increase the storage space so I can have several restore points. When I click 'Apply' or 'Okay' after changing the space allocation, the following error appears:

"The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect. Error 0x800707B"

The following drives appear in the Restore Config window with Restore set to 'On':

System_DRV
Windows7_OS(C:)(System)
Windows7_OS(C:)(Missing) -- this seems odd to me

Would anyone have any insights on this problem or should I post a new thread?

Thanks again for everyone's help.
