Insufficient privleges to run defrag

If I try to run the GUI version, I have to click on the "Defrag Now" button a few times before the defragmenter will even open. When I highlight a disk and select Analyze or Defragment, a DOS window flashes and the defragmenter closes. That's with UAC disabled. With it enabled, I say yes, and then defrag closes. If try to run defrag in DOS, it says: The disk defragmenter cannot start because you have insufficient priveleges to perform this operation. (0x89000024)

This may or may not have anything to do with the problem but, I used a registry hack to replace(I didn't realize it would replace, I thought it would just add) "Run As Administrator" in right-click menus with "Take Ownership". I "uninstalled" it but "Take Ownership" is still showing up. I was gonna try to run CMD as an administrator to see if that let the DOS version of Defrag work but I can't because of this(If only there was an SU command for DOS). Apparently the GUI version of defrag is trying to take ownership without me even telling it to. In the details of the UAC message box, it says: "cmd.exe"/c takeown /f

Yeah, I screwed something up.

The reason it says G: instead of C: is because I installed W7 by extracting from the ISO and started setup from the Autorun EXE(It wouldn't get past the nasty CD\DVD driver not found message if I booted the ISO). I started the setup within another W7 installation that was on another drive. It didn't install bootmgr on this drive, instead it added a menu item to the bootmgr on the other drive. I had to copy bootmgr from the other drive(and use EasyBCD to edit bootmgr) which had several partitions. I'm wondering if I should fix it or even how. If I did change it to C:, it would cause conflicts with installed programs so maybe I should just leave it alone.

try to remove all the registry entries manually

extract the "uninstall" file from the zip and then right-click on it and edit

Then go through each of the entries to make sure they are correct

Since you are running 64 bit windows I suppose it is possible that registry entries were not removed correctly

Run as admin. Works for me...

BUT...

Only in installed 'as admin'. I use GoldenBow's Vopt for defrag.

I just type defrag in the start menu search box, select Disk Defragmenter and press enter. I don't know why you need to run it as Admin, because I don't. This is with UAC enabled btw

I don't. It doesn't give me a choice.

I forgot the zip had an uninstall.reg. I just executed it but it didn't make a difference. Maybe I have to reboot. I guess I'll try manually removing the entries if that doesn't work.

I guess I've stumped you guys eh? I can't do system restore because the only restore point was made today after a Windows Update. I was able to log in as anadministrator and was able to run the defragger. I still can't get Run as Administrator back. I Googled around and noone else has a solution for that either other than system restore.


Somebody complained about the hack replacing RAA with TO instead of adding TO(like the picture in fact shows) and they updated the hack. I installed the update and all it did was add another instance of TO if I right-click on a Start Menu item. Otherwise it had no effect at all.

How reputable is askvg.com anyway? You gotta like the quick response to a complaint though.

TBH, that reg hack may be more of a PITA than you realize.

If you still have the original .reg file, post both original and the 'fixed' version here as a ZIP file and I can take a look and see what it changed, and then post my reg file back so that you can restore your RAD to your context menu.
