Solved Intermittent BSOD - BCCode: fe USB Related Error

I am getting an intermittent system lockup sometimes resulting in a BSOD or sometimes a system freeze, e.g. display freezes with no response from the mouse or keyboard. The errors can occur several times a day or it can be a number of days between errors. It is very unpredictable and does not appear to be result of any action or program. The error code (see attached .txt file) indicates a USB driver error. I have disconnected all USB devices and replaced the USB mouse/keyboard. The error still returns. I have updated the MB bios and all drivers to the latest versions from Gigabyte. Again, the error still persists. I am running Windows 7 professional 64 bit OS. I have also attached the mini dump file in the .zip file. I would very much appreciate some help here.

* Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp,sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Use this SPTD uninstaller DuplexSecure - Downloads

When you're done you can use this Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) in its place.

* I would also remove and replace the Symantec with Microsoft Security Essentials at least to test.

* Finally your USBPORT.SYS driver was invoked.
I would run a System File Check to verify and repair the OS files.

Hi JMH, Thanks for the quick reply. I have uninstalled the sptd.sys and run the sfc.exe program. The program did not report any errors or problems. So I am not sure about the usbport.sys driver. I do not have any cd virtualization programs that I am aware of, certainty not the Deamon tools or Alcohol 120%. Although the sptd.sys file was present. You mentioned to unstal Norton anti virus program. Is this software know to cause my type of error? I will monitor the OS to see if the errors return. Can you explain the usbport.sys file when the sfc.exe did not return any errors?

Your BSOD pointed to spdt.sys.
At the time it was running & was probably caused by usbehci.sys.
It may be related or innocent.
Norton may be the underling problem.

You queried USBPORT given SFC didn't show errors.
SFC compares the active driver with the one in stores only.
If they are the same it passes.
That doesn't mean that Norton (or something else) isn't corrupting it.

FYI. Norton is know to be implicated in BSoD's.

Hi JMH, I was thinking closing this thread as there were no problems since our last email. However today the system just crashed and then rebooted. There have not been any BSOD's or freezes, only this system crash. I have uninstalled the Norton's anti virus and replaced it with the Microsoft Essentials as suggested. I have also checked and the sptd.sys file is not present. Can you review the dump file (attached) to give me any ideas on where to go to next? Much appreciated.

The newest is still related to your USBPORT.SYS and since SFC did not find any errors I would do the following.

1- Re-install USB driver

Thanks ZigZag, I have followed the instructions to removed the USB drivers and re-create the infcache.1 file. Is ther a way to, or can you identify the USB device that caused the problems with the usbport.sys file?

Not with the current DMP's but new ones may give us clues or the answer, so keep uploading them.
