Hi everyone,

I have a problem with a laggy keyboard and slow response to commands. The issue manifests itself as a 3-5 second delay every so often that stops the characters appearing on the screen even though I am typing. There is a similar delay when executing a command function such as waiting for the bold button to highlight before it can be clicked or scrolling the page up with the mouse wheel. The problem is the same whether using the laptop or external keyboard or mouse. These commands can be in any program and create the problem. This problem will occur even when only MSWord is open. Using process explorer the system is showing idle levels of 90% when these issues are occurring.
I had endured this issue for months and tried some typical fixes to no avail. So I used the recovery disks for my Toshiba Satellite L645 laptop to start from scratch. After recovering the system I updated the bios and then proceeded to load my MS office suite. I found that the lagging problem still existed. I am really frustrated that this major action did not fix the problem. I did notice that some of the gazillion updates that were needed to bring the windows up to current status did not load successfully. I noticed this was also the case on the original windows load.
My first instinct was to roll back the system and try to reload the updates. Unfortunately there is not a system restore point that goes back that far. All the failed updates were done within 2 days of regenerating the computer. I regenerated the computer on 23 June 2012.
After reviewing a couple of threads in this forum I did use CC Cleaner to remove some junk from the system but nothing has changed. I also checked the hard drive for issues using the DOS commands and all is fine.

Does anyone have any ideas for a fix?

Thanks

Tony

Hi Greg, thanks for responding and the excellent series of suggestions. It has taken me a while to respond as I have done everything except to do a clean install using a Windows 7 disk. Unfortunately the changes I have made using your other suggestions have not made a difference to the lag so I will do the re-install of windows (again) when I can find the 2 days of time when I don't need my laptop for work.

Thanks for all your help

Tony

Hi Tony -

Sorry to hear of the bad luck results but in the end getting a perfect Clean Reinstall is even better than getting a new computer considering how much crapware comes preinstalled.

So be sure to follow the steps closely so you only have to do it once, then you can rely on a backup image you save after it's set up and running right.
