Just want to say thanks to all who posted on this thread...this is the most useful guidance I can find on this problem.

I also want to add this one tip...if you launch IE from the Taskbar (in Win 7), unpin it and go to Start, look for IE 64bit and pin that.

I have a new Lenovo Thinkpad that I did a recovery from mfr's backup. So, it should be a factory "pristine" system right? Turns out that the default for the Taskbar is IE 32bit.

Indeed, when I was using IE 32bit, I would intermittently have the unclickable icon problem. I also noticed that the cache was retained from one session to the next (sites were not automatically logged off on exit). Seeing those processes running in Task Manager made it all click for me. No wonder I was getting strange results.

Now, if someone could tell me where to find a solution for the intermittent problem I am having with the system freezing (no mouse movement, ctrl-alt-delete, typing, etc). The laptop does not seem to be overheating, at least not to the touch...I've had that happen on others. Any ideas what else to consider?

Transplanted,

FIRST-need your system specs. See following and use Speccy to gather info.

Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec
(left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

Add the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
“system manufacturer” block, for example,
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

Transplanted,
I'm going to request that your post and answers to you post be pulled out and posted into their own thread.

I didn't realize that there about four different people asking questions in one thread.

Such a situation only causes confusion and makes helping a person very difficult.

I'm going to continue to answer since I did ask you for info, but for future cases, be aware that hijacking a thread or riding along on someone elses thread is a no-no.

Transplanted,

UNINSTALL

Norton Internet Security Symantec Corporation 5/18/2012 18.7.1.3
ThreatFire PC Tools 5/19/2012

REBOOT!

Install MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials--link in my signature.

These steps above will most probably fix your problem.

Here are links you will need.

AVG Download tools and utilities

https://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US

Disable all tasks in CCleaner's Task Scheduler

100% uninstall PCDoctor will most certainly make your computer sick.

Transplanted,
WIN | type MSCONFIG | ENTER | STARTUP tab

uncheck ALL

REBOOT!

Karl, thanks, I'll give it a shot and let you know.

Also, I understand the rationale for having a separate thread to deal with this one stand alone issue and reduce possible confusion. Good call.

However, FYI...my intent was far from hijacking or riding someone else's thread. The intent was to thank the other posters as that helped me resolve one of my problems. I was just looking for someone to point me in the right direction on the last bit, since a few google searches did not reveal any paths forward.

Now my thanks to the other posters looks kinda weird hanging out there like that, but I can live with that. :)

Excellent.
Let us know the results.
Be sure and not miss anything.

Since everything got merged together, it can be easy to skip over a step, especially such things as the frequent need to reboot.

Karl, hello!

Thought I'd give an update, as it has been about a week since I've implemented the instructions you provided...No freezing since!!!!

I must confess that I did not follow the last part re: MSCONFIG as there were items there I know I use and want to automatically start up, though there are others I am not sure of and not sure how to reverse if I do want them back. I did follow all the rest of the advice.

I highly suspect it was the Norton "Security" software that came prepackaged with the laptop. On every reboot it always had a couple of pop-ups (with scarey messages) trying to get me to buy the full package - seems it was only a 30 day trial.

Reason I suspect it now, looking back, I had a desktop years ago where I bought the Norton package and when the year was up it had similar popups. On that one, it would drop into BSOD on shutdown that I could never resolve. When I eventually uninstalled it the shutdown BSOD problem went away. Symantec / Norton are real crapware, IMHO!

Bottom line: I was looking for pointers and you gave a solution - Thank you very much, Karl!!!

Transplanted,
Thanks for the update.

Glad to be of assistance.

You can "undo" changes in MSCONFIG by going back to the STARTUP tab thereof and checking a box which you unchecked, apply and reboot.
