Internet Connection Issue

This is probably a trivial problem and easily solved so I am sorry for troubling people here with it but it is driving me to distraction.

I recently moved house and changed internet service providers (from Orange to BT, for those familiar with the UK). Setting up my new homehub (the modem provided by BT) was easy and I was online in minutes.

However, every morning when I get up and switch on my computer it will not connect to the net. Hovering over the icon it says "Unidentified network, no internet access"). Restarting everything several times over eventually resolves the problem and I can get online but I cannot fathom what is causing the problem. I cannot even discover any particular order of switching off or switching on which works consistently.

The only thing I have noticed (and I am not even sure this is connected to the problem) is that when I get online, if I hover over the internet icon it says "Network 3" rather than just "Network".

Is there some procedure to resolve this issue or at least to discover what the real problem is?

How are you connecting to the Homehub ? Do you connect via Ethernet or Wireless ? Do you leave the Homehub turned on all the time or do you turn it off each night ?

Sorry for all the questions but it may help the experts to better answer you, I have a BT Homehub but I'm no expert.
I leave mine turned on at all times even though the computers are turned off each night, I have 2 computers connected both via Ethernet cable, although 1 used to be via wireless but that was running XP. Hubby did complain about not having the best connection via Wireless so when he got a new machine with Windows 7 it didn't have a wireless card so we decided to connect via Ethernet and he's happy and doesn't have any problems now.

Another thought what Security programs do you run ?

My computer is connected via an ethernet cable and I have tried leaving my homehub on at night and also tried switching it off and turning it on again when I get up in the morning but I have the same problem. I am running MSE for security and Windows Firewall.

I can't help but feel it is somehow connected to my internet connection showing up as "Network 3" when I finally get online but I have no idea how to resolve it.

Ok, it seems nobody here has been able to help me so far but the problem persists so I thought I would come back here with some more information and see if there is a breakthrough. I cannot tell whether my problem is too difficult, too vaguely described or simply too trivial to elicit any assistance.

I was poking around in the network and sharing centre and clicked on the option to "merge or delete networks" and I can see three networks. "Network" and "Network 2" are listed as "not in use", while "Network 3" (which I am always connected to once my internet connection starts functioning after multiple restarts each morning) is the one "in use".

Could these rogue networks be the source of the problem? Should I go ahead and merge them? Is merging them likely to cause other problems or is it safe?

Also, I have been researching elsewhere and I found some information recommending using ipconfig renew and resetting winsock here. Specifically I was going to follow the procedure outlined in the first response in that thread by Evelyne.

Advisable and safe? Or not?

I would be grateful for some pointers before I jump in and start opening up command prompts, as I trust this forum more than I trust any other.
