I have an ssl tunnel set up and connect through a socks proxy via firefox. I would like to start using internet explorer but it will not allow a connection through the proxy. I use this laptop for travel and will only connect securely through the ssl tunnel so I must get this to work. Any suggestions?

Is there any specific reason you need Internet Explorer? I would rather stick to Firefox or Chrome...

Which OS are you using?
Do you use third-party firewall software?

I suppose that there is no reason that I "have" to use IE. It works flawlessly with Firefox. I havent tried with Chrome yet.

Are you asking which OS I am using to connect to for the proxy? or which OS I am having trouble getting IE 8 to use this tunnel? FreeBSD is the system that I am connecting to. Windows 7 <grin> is the OS on the laptop.

I am using Windows 7 built in firewall but have installed Avast for anti-virus. I may disable the anti-virus just to make certain that isnt the culprit. It does inspect web traffic so it could possibly be causing the problem.

You should give these steps a try:
1. Open IE
2. Tools tab -> Internet Options
3. Click on Restore Adanced Settings
4. Click on Reset Internet Explorer settings.
5. Close IE
6. Right click on the cmd prompt and open as administrator
7. At the command line type "netsh winsock reset"
8. Reboot.
9. Check your proxy configuration and set it again if needed.

These steps solved many IE8 issues. Try it and, please, post if that helped, so we can try something different if not.

bytetracer,

It did not work.

It appears to be more of a windows issue? rather than IE8. I also cannot check my email through the socks proxy. anything that the operating system directs to the proxy does not seem to connect properly. Firefox works fine however "it has its own proxy settings".

I disabled the virus scanner and turned off windows firewall to see if it would allow the connection but it has not. :(

Oh yes, and by the way... If I set up thunderbird to connect through the proxy it works as well.
