Internet explorer updating question

I did a reinstall awhile back and on my win 7 64 bit sp1 system IE 8 came up and i remember having IE9 in the past. I decided to go to the Microsoft website and downloaded IE10 for my system but i am starting to get some nastys slipping through.

How do i know if it's updated or installed correctly.

Could you be more specific about "starting to get some nastys slipping through" first? I'm not 100% sure what you mean.
