About 8 days ago, after switching on the computer, I got a blue screen with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and lots of other information. I had to crash the computer and restart, after which I was given the option to start normally or do a system check (I think). I chose the recommended action (system check) and the computer did its stuff. Thereafter, I was able to start normally. This problem disappeared the next day but has returned today. This time I chose 'start normally' and ignored the recommended setting (system check or similar). The PC is less than a month old and uses Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit. Could someone tell me what to do about this please?

Hi Koolkat - thanks for the response. Should I do a complete, kernel or small memory dump?

OK...hope I've attached the SF diagnostic thing properly! By the way, one of the error messages I had was "ERROR No boot isk has been detected or the boot disk has failed." Does this make any difference?

Thanks

When did you get that error?

Code:
STOP 0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Usual causes: Kernel mode driver, System Service, BIOS, Windows, Virus scanner,
 Backup tool, compatibilityBugCheck A, {0, 2, 0, fffff80002eadf74}
Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe ( nt!KiPageFault+260 )

"ntkrnlmp.exe" is not the true cause of your crash but on searching more I found the cause of your problem. Don't be surprised. it's your antivirus.

Norton is known to cause BSoDs, my suggestion to you is to uninstall it completely including all its components. Use Microsoft Security Essentials instead. It's free, light weight and most compatible with the Windows 7 OS. I'll add more links for you to go through:

Hope it helps!

Run the System File Checker that scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible:
Then run Disk Check on your hard disk for file system errors and bad sectors on it:

Let me know the results and further crashes if any

Hi - thanks for identifying the problem for me - have now installed Microsoft Security Essentials and uninstalled Norton 360, although I have saved my Norton settings (just in case). I have checked the box for the firewall to be enabled. Should I also instal Malwarebytes or just rely upon MS Security Essentials?

The message "ERROR No boot disk has been detected or the boot disk has failed" appeared after the BSOD.

You can keep both. They are a great combination.

Are you able to load into windows?

Hi again. I have now completed all the items you suggested. Scannow found no problems and neither did the CHKDSK. I can't say yet whether the original problem has disappeared as it was intermittent - most times I could boot up the computer without the BSOD appearing. There was a gap of about eight days between the first and second set of occurrences of the BSOD, so it might be some time before I know for sure. If it does recur, I'll get back to you.

Many thanks for all your help.
