Solved Is there a way to export Folder templates?

I like the way Windows 7 has the ability to customise folder templates based on the type of file viewed, eg music, pictures, video, documents.

I am in the process of upgrading the boot drives on my Windows 7 PCs from HDD to SSD but I will be doing a clean Windows install on each system to start afresh (rather than carry through the detritus of a number of years worth of using each installation). One problem, though, is having to set up folder templates again on each PC. I've often wondered is there a way of saving the various templates and exporting them to each new PC installation?

Hello soulman, and welcome to Ten Forums.

If you like, you could backup and restore your folder view settings that would include folder templates.

Thanks Brink, I can't imagine ever joining Win 10, but that's another story, LOL!

Errmm, I don't know what happened using the link you provided but it succeeded in screwing up all the existing folder settings I had, most irritating.... :-(

Anyway, I've actually found a tutorial you posted way back on 8th July 2009 "How to set a default folder template for all folders in Windows 7" (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/15699-folder-template-default.html) which I recall using many years ago soon after I first got Win 7. I'm hoping the "Restore Default Folder Templates batch file will reset everything back to square one and then I can use the other batch files to do what I need.

A real pity that Win 7 hides its default settings in the registry rather than as document files, but I guess we can't have everything!

I'm glad you got it sorted.

Backing up your folder view settings shouldn't have affected them since it doesn't make any changes to them.

It was restoring them from the HDD to the SSD that changed the settings.

Anyway I am working through your original 2009 tutorial and hopefully that will do the job.

Ah, that could be why if you didn't have the backup folder on your desktop before restoring, but I'm glad you got it sorted.

Actually I did, I copied it over from the HDD to the SSD Desktop. Anyway, working my way through things manually now!
