System restore only makes backups of windows system files, and possible Office system files so is not a complete system recovery system as it ignores all data and most programs and their data

What a lot of our users do is take regular system images using Macrium Reflect Free to an external Hard drive - This would be the complete contents of your system and would be re-installable in as little as 15 minutes or so depending on size . The filehost option would only be practical if you have storage capacity and up and download speeds capable of performing this - Specialist image software may also be required and/or supplied by the seller of the filespace.

A decent size external HDD would be available for a few months or even weeks online storage costs for a complete OS recovery image

Check the forum tutorials for Image backup options and do's and don'ts

It is possible to use a shadow copy in the way suggested.

It is simpler to use a disk imaging program- they create a temporary restore point, which they then copy into a compressed file. That is called a disk ( or partition ) image.

Some disk imaging programs also let you choose files to exclude from the image if you wish.

If you want to copy anything (or everything ) from a restore point, you could also use ShadowCopyView - Shadow copy viewer for Windows 10/8/7/Vista

System restore is a program that only uses parts of the shadow copy in the restore process.

If you prefer to use a drive/disk imaging program - there is already one built to windows, and several 3rd party programs also. Aomei Backupper is probably the simplest to use. The standard version is free.

I'm with SIW2. Make partition backup (including all thing in the partition) or disk backup (including all thing in the disk) if you not only want to recover your OS but also data and apps in the future point. I have used the software aomei backuppper recommended by SWI2 and it is the easiest program i've ever used. Mostly, it is free:D. cosmicanddavid, also, there maybe other ways, need time to find.
