Just got my GTX 480

yea my 24" uses the power.. and I ran Crysis at enthusiasts and 16xAA and that was smooth and beautiful.. thats a feat.

and yea the 280 is a good card, but the DX11 on this card is that next level that will do the job. Wait til Crysis 2 comes out, you'll "NEED" a new card. haha i think. (but maybe not since it's really optimized) afterall it will be on consoles.

It's going to look pretty thats for sure, and when the DX11 games come out even better. The jump from the 8800GT to the GTX280 was a night and day difference with Crysis. I could probably see a difference with the 480 but not as dramatic as the last jump. A screen shot at 16XAA compared to 2XAA would be interesting I think.

Not that it matters much but what kind of scores do you see with Vantage?

I saw you were going to do some benchmarks. Did you get a chance to run GTA IV? The latest patch(two days ago) pretty much raped my performance. Game is almost un-playable now with a lot of stuttering, texture flickering and pop-in. Horrible. Was fine before the patch.

Are you kidding? Mine got better. No more frame lag. Runs very smooth. But it freaked out and said my key was invalid.

well. Regarding GTA IV. I just read that there is an update for it on STEAM. I actually use steam for most of my games. and GTA IV as fun as it was. I actually stopped playing because for PC it was a mess. Windows live starting, and the social club and all that crap on my PC. and I couldn't get it all to stop. it was just irritating.

If I can add it to steam and have ALLLL that go away. I'll be doing that instead and just start over or copy over my saves. so I might be a day or 2 on the GTA benchmarks. but more other benchies are coming 2nite.

oh and Jerm.. Thanks. hopefully you guys ship my block soon. I got the first email n thats all. but it's only been 2 days. I'm sure it will ship monday or so.

as far as SLI. I do have the eVGA 480 pre-ordered from amazon. according to a few sources of mine the GTX 400 and mainly 480 shortage that is going on right now will NOT last, and nvidia has just finished shipping tons of them to everyone. Next week starting April 19th (Monday) Newegg is supposed to get many brands in stock, as well as TD on the 20th, and same thing goes for a few other stores. so i'm HOPING that on monday my eVGA ships from amazon. if so I'll be sure to run a few benchmarks and have some fun. but in the end I'll sell the gigabyte n keep only one.

Some think its an nvidia issue but there were a couple ATI reports of issues. But yeah I lost a good 10-20 FPS regardless of shadow settings. I ran high before just fine. The big issue i'm having now though is texture flickering and some stuttering here and there. Also before the game would hit lowest FPS in the low 30's. Now i've hit the low 20's to a little under 20 before! I have the steam version so I can't revert to the old patch. I tried earlier but as soon as it installed it started the update even though I had auto-updates off. Thankfully I already beat IV and don't play it as much anymore but I was looking forward to picking up the expansions but I won't be if this is how the performance will be.

I might try some older drivers again because before I used 196.21 which worked great. Recently though I picked up 197.45 which gave me a noticeable boost in a few of my games especially Just Cause 2. Since I play that a lot lately i'm kinda reluctant to go back to the older drivers.

get MSI Afterburner.. the latest beta5 comes out tomorrow with GTX 470 voltage tweaking for all cards... and also if you wont be adjusting voltage at least turn up fan. at 65% i can't hear the fan at all in my system and I idle at 44c.. then I turn it up a little higher for gaming.

Sorry for being ambiguous last night (just got home from work).
That was at XGUNTHERC's fan settings.

The ambient room temp is warmer today and the fan is now set at a default of 76%, due to my current clocking settings.
I think XGUNTHERC's temp of 44c might be due to the 480's heat pipes.

I also included a snapshot of my cpu temp, directly above the 470, to give you an idea on how the card affects other components.

your i7 sits at 29c with only the AC Freezer Pro HSF.. thats a pretty decent CPU temp.. mines around 29-33c on water-cooling, but then I'm at 4.0 Ghz

Yea the heatpipes might be it. Right now my card is sitting at 44c and I have a house temp of 78F for most the summer cuz in Vegas the power bill and heat both increase pretty bad in the summer.
oh and it's not just the heatpipes. your lovely GTX 470 has the same 5 pipes, just not as long and slightly smaller. see the vid

I think the larger cooling parts help though. oh and is your i7 860 on stock speeds?

Yea my i7-860 is stock speed lol. Figured I would let Intel manage it, I do mostly graphic work on here and don't need a high constant clock.

The cpu/MB temp hasn't changed since I installed the 470, I guess it doesn't hurt to have one of these blowing in from the side: Newegg.com - VANTEC TD8038H 80mm Case Fan

Hmm do you think the 480's pipes being partialy exposed might be the temp drop?

well the heat pipes being exposed instead of enclosed in the plastic gets them more air, as well as lets them get air from the case airflow and if you have good airflow that helps. but I wouldn't remove the plastic top on the 470 and run it open as the heat will go in the case instead of out the back.

Also, if you overclock that i7 from stock 2.8 ghz to something very easy to hit like 3.4 Ghz will make a large difference in the performance of that GTX 470.. at 2.8 it's pretty slow. I promise you if you ran a few benchmarks or some 3DMark benchmarks or a games built in one with the GTX 470 stock, and the cpu stock, then again with only the CPU being at like 3.4 Ghz. you'd get better framerates. a decent improvement. that CPU is good for a nice 3.6 Ghz or more. but 3.4 Ghz would be low, not require any voltage or put much heat out. not a bad idea.

Hmm after watching that video, I wonder if it would be better if I cleaned and used Arctic silver, probably void warranty.
The video poster has another one with temps and he is getting 41c
I can just imagine, that a disgruntled factory worker slapped that "clay" on mine with a butter knife..lol.

Yea I'll fiddle with the cpu and see what I can come up with.
