Solved Keyboard breakdown?!

Hi guys,


Ok. On my desktop pc for no apparent reason the letter keys have gone from standard qwerty layout to alphabetical order!
So q=a and m=z. I'm running Windows 7. I tried to add and remove in device manager, no joy. No function keys are pressed as its a big button keyboard with not every key

Also I confirmed the keyboard was qwerty UK version. I'm befuddled!

Any ideas?!

Where possible, in PC troubleshooting we will replace a suspect part, like a keyboard or mouse as the first stage in troubleshooting the problem. Have you done that? Till you do that, all else is subject to mere conjecture.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I only have that one keyboard currently. Maybe it's just died and reverted to a demented state!

I thought that it may be a configuration or language selection reason, but, alas, not.

Keyboards don't generate characters. They send a position code and the OS generate the characters.
Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\region and language and check the language and the default keyboard layout.
I would say that you don't have a UK English Keyboard layout.

Why would it go into a->z layout superimposed on a qwerty keyboard randomly!:huh:

Try to change the keyboard layout to US English and remove the UK English. Se if it work as qwerty.

Do a system file check. Open a CMD window and type:
sfc /scannow

This are the UK keyboards DLL. See if they mach date and size on your folder
C:\Windows\System32
C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Hi,

The scannow search returned a result of 'no integrity violations'

KBDUK and KBDUKX DLLs both have a date of 14/7/09 and size of 6and7kb respectively.

Changing to US keyboard and QWERTY layout did nothing.

I'm thinking of a KB replacement but would prefer not!

Download and run SUPERAntiSpyware - SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner
For me it will be a big surprise if a new keyboard fix the problem.
Give it a try. Don't you have another computer that you can borrow the keyboard?

I just used an adaptor to plug the KB into my tablet. It auto installed and migrated the key fault over.

Surely this mean an internal KB fault?

I only have one KB.

I can run the malware app later.

If the problem is also on the tablet, the problem is the keyboard and you have to buy a new one.

If you could swap keyboards with a friend, you would find out immediately if the keyboard is the problem, or if there is some other problem. Or, perhaps you could buy a cheap keyboard, and then return it to the store for your money back if the keyboard is not the problem.

Update: Perhaps you already have bought a keyboard (I just read your last post).
