Can you open your keyboard settings and see what setting you have up?

It should be normal USA format.

Yes I've checked and that's the only one I have...

Keylogger. Malware. Rootkit? Sorry to be an alarmist but it's the only thing that fits thus far. I hope I'm wrong.

Suggests to me you have some weird background program running if it sort of works fine in games but wigs out on IM and other applications. Run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and try also posting a HijackThis Log.

I ran both of these programs, and here is my lengthy hijack this log, thanks so much. Sorry if its really a pain to look at.

if you use on screen keyboard, does it do the same thing? if it works in safe mode i suggest you try doing a cleanboot to try to find the offending program/driver.

the OSK suggestion was just to understand more where the problem was coming from than a solution! Have you tried the clean boot option, i do believe that could help reveal the culprit, especially as there is no problem in safe mode.

Yup, and all it said was that there were program that run when it starts... which is way unhelpful >.>;

Then it has the nerve to ask me if it fixed my problem <.<;

read the link i posted for cleanboot, it explains to remove all startup stuff then reboot, then to allow half to start, and so on. it is quite a reasonable way to narrow down the problem. Also I notice you are not the OP, so please try to allow him to respond, as this really was who i was directing my advice. (it would be nice if it fixed your problem also!)

Ok, well having found the time to disable different startup applications I found that if I disable an application called "GID Desktop Application" I no longer have to hold Alt because the keys are working normally and I feel a sense of frustration leave me as I can now play my games again, thank you Pusspa for the suggestion, I'll probably build a small shrine in tribute to you as a token of my gratitude... if you need me I'll be shooting zombies... lots and lots of zombies... because shooting anything else just isn't as much fun... well... maybe kids but I have yet to see that game >.>;

I would find whatever that is and remove it immediately as well.

GuardedID is the culprit: link.

Oddly, it was doing what it was designed to do:

Sometimes I see the wrong character when I type. What can I do?
Certain programs use Windows Message Hooks in a non-standard way that makes them appear to GuardedID® as keyloggers. Every time you type into one of these programs you will see numbers in sequence (1-2-3-4-etc.) instead of what you are typing. To use these programs, please exit "GuardedID® Desktop Protection" (the "G" in the bottom right of the desktop). Restart Desktop from the Start | Programs menu when you are finished with the non-standard program.

This is killing me.
When in word documents or typing in browsers, my laptop keyboard is perfectly fine, but when I'm in a game or certain other programs (like typing in Pandora, the internet radio) my keyboard (all the numbers, letters, and punctuation keys), when hit, will display numbers. No matter what key is pressed the first press gives me a "1," the next a "2," and so forth until "0" which is when it goes back to "1." I can't play anything and have to copy paste into Pandora's typing field. Oddly, when I hit CTRL-V to paste it still registers. CTRL-random number would not paste, so something is (I think) changing my letters into numbers after the letter registers.
I tried to do all the Num-lock and scroll-lock stuff but it didn't work.
AVG Free's scheduled scan turned up nothing.
I'm currently scanning with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot S&D. Unhackme says there is no Trojan on my computer.
I temporarily fixed the problem previously with a system restore, but it did not last.
Someone please help!
I think I have solved this issue. I was having the same problem and followed all the steps listed here with no luck. I then went in and removed my AV software and now it is fixed I reinstalled better AV software and problem is gone.

Do not know why but this is what solved my issue hopefully this will help

I just had to make a reply to this...as I had same problem and was pulling my hair out over it. Screw being an older post with no value, as this just happened to me and this was only place mentioning the GuardedID program. But that was the culprit. I killed it in start up and now my Logitech G510 keyboard works just fine. I then uninstalled that sucker, ROAR!

Sucks tho cuz I had same problem b4 and thought it was the keyboard and went out and purchased a brand new one (these things are over 100 bucks retail)...oh well...spare I guess lol.

Anyways, Thanx again... W000 !! :D

Letters Typed Appear as Numbers - FIX

I was experiencing the same problems and came across the solution that worked for my Lenovo Y550 laptop. Here it is:

Typed letters appear as increasing numbers ( 0,1,2,3,4,5). When I type letters they appear as numbers which increase instead of letters.

This issue could be caused by a software program called GuardedID. Follow the steps below to prevent the application from starting up or you may remove the application if you want to.

To prevent GID application from Starting Up:

Click Start
Click Run
Type "msconfig"
Select "Startup" tab
Unchecked GID desktop application
Press OK then reboot laptop.
or

To uninstall GID Application from Windows

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Add / Remove Programs
Search for "GID" / "GID Desktop Application
Select the item and select uninstall
Reboot when uninstall is done.

Hope this helps those coming to look for help!

numbers only with windows 10

You all are my heroes! I was having this problem intermittently with Windows 7. If I rebooted, it would work ok for a while. I upgraded to Windows 10 and the problem got worse. I couldn't even enter anything in the URL line and rebooting didn't help. I could not find a solution and gave up and switched to using my Chromebook exclusively. Today I was on the phone with a Software technician for a problem with my bank account. He suggested we try using IE. I went back to the laptop and could get nowhere with it. I was ready to throw it out the window. I tried one last time to search for a solution and came across this forum. Sure enough, I uninstalled GuardedID and it works beautifully now!
