Solved Language Issues (Spanish/English)

This is a new problem when I type in Spanish. I do not think I had this issue before. When I type words in Spanish such as "mejor" which means better, it is automatically changed to "major" which of course means something entirely different. This happens with many words, another example is "haciendo" (which is a tense of the verb to be); it is changed to "hacienda" which is something like a type of house and so on. Most of the words are underlined in red. I already tried adding the language bar for Spanish, but all that does is change the keyboard as well as the names of the folders from English to Spanish, which is not what I want. I want to write properly in English without going back to check word by word. Can anyone help???Thanks, Ana

Hi Ana, welcome to the Seven Forums.

The issue you describe is not a Windows issue. It simply means that your word processor is using English spell check. Your examples confirm it; mejor is not English where as major is, and again haciendo is not English but hacienda is, so in both cases the spell check "thinks" you have made a typo and auto-corrects it.

Not knowing which word processor you are using, please consult the manual and / or help files of the word processor to find out how to turn Spanish spell check and dictionary on.

This Microsoft page tells you how to change proof reading language on Word: http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/...etting-the-proofing-language-HA010354272.aspx

If this happens when typing on browser, for instance on web email client composing messages, consult the help files of that browser to find out how to add Spanish spell check and dictionary.

Thank you Kari

I have Office 2010. Is that the word processor that you may be referring to? I am going to do some research to see if I have that option. Thank you for the prompt response. Sincerely, Ana

Yes, MsOffice Word 2010 is a word processor and if you are using it to type Spanish, you need to disable English proof reading and auto-correct or install / enable Spanish proof reading.

This quote from the Microsoft Office page I linked to in my previous post:

Word

To change the language of a document to check the spelling, do the following:
  • Place your cursor in the file where you want to start typing text in a different language or, if you have already typed the text, select the text.
  • On the Review tab, in the Language group, click Set Proofing Language.
  • In the Language dialog box, select the language that you want.
  • Start typing.

Issue is with emails

Thank you again, but I want to clarify that this happens when I use either google or yahoo to type emails, not sure that this is a Word problem. When I added Spanish to the language bar it changed the keyboard which is not what I want because it eliminates some characters such as @. Thank you again. Ana

The Problem is the Typing

Thank you, I am aware of some of the short cuts. The problem is that I write emails in both Spanish and English and I do not recall the actual words being changed, unless I missed it in the past. I use both gmail and yahoo. I do not think there is a way to change this with Windows 7 Premium based on everything that I have read. Thanks for all your help. Ana

The article I linked to in my previous post tells exactly that, how to spell check in different languages using IE10.

Windows 8

Kari, thank you, but I think that this is geared to Windows 8 and I have 7. I could upgrade to windows 8, maybe it is something that I should consider. I will read the info in the link more carefully. Thank you again.

Thank you!!!

Kari, I believe that this is going to work. I guess I have to settle for either Spanish or English but not both since it requires you to select the default language. At this point I am using more often the Spanish so I will use that language, maybe I will go back and forth to change to English whenever I have to type an email in English, but right now, I just tested "mejor" and it did not changed. Thanks a lot for your help. this can be marked as solved. Ana
