If you can't update the program that way you could download the installer and try running it to update to the new version.
I always create a system backup image before making changes such as this!

You could always use the avast removal tool as well.

avast! Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for avast! Removal

Run it in safe mode and it will remove avast completely. Then download a fresh copy of the new version and install.

Totally agree !

I installed the update from the GUI with Windows Firewall and MBAM Pro running and had no install problems.
Maybe UrAsish is using a different firewall, malware security programs, etc. ???
It seems any person may have issues, perhaps depending on what else they have running/installed on their PC.
I also re-boot before doing an update such as this, just to "clean things up"...

Only windows firewall and windows defender. Now even the definitions are not updating since 20-10-13. Manual update is initializing even without internet connection :shock: and stays at initialization step till system restart.
aswclear.exe is always the last option. Any other options to overcome this problem??

I have Windows Defender turned off on all my systems, but I do use MBAM Pro and feel that offers better protection...
So, I can't say if Windows Defender might cause a problem...I doubt it, but I don't know.

As you have no Internet Connection, I think that is a problem you MUST fix before you can update...
Are you posting from the PC in your screen print with no Internet connection ?

Windows defender never caused a problem while updating avast before.

As you have no Internet Connection, I think that is a problem you MUST fix before you can update...

Without internet connection avast always showed "connection terminated, retrying", but not now.

I only connect to the internet using a dial up modem.

I downloaded the Avast 9 files before I attempted updating so I had them just in case...
This screen print shows the file size, in case that info might help you before you download via dialup.



Have you attempted downloading these files and updating using the installer?

A few suggestions:

• Fix current install: Try Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> avast -> repair
• Update to new version:
• I'm waiting until avast provides the next program update to version 9.
  • Do you have a Wifi adapter?
    Is there Wifi near you? Coffee shop, Restauraunt, Library?

I didn't think of dial up. Have you tried connecting by dialing up before you attempt to do the update?

yeah I did. But same initialization process continued for hours without affecting intermet usage data.

Yeah, only that option was left. Used aswclear and then installed new version and updated. Working fine till now.

@DavidW7ncus Unable to update using installer. Had to Uninstall 8.1500.
