Just what I was asking. With Norton I´ve been used to let it do the job alone. No other mal/spyware software, no Defender. I just didn´t know what to do if I change to Avast.

Not yet. I decided to try MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials mainly because I´ve lately changed my mind about Microsoft. I am one of those users been years hovering between Windows and Linux and very sceptical towards all MS-products. I´m a bit ashamed to admit late 90´s I contributed some opinions to legendary website f**kmicrosoft.com, later known as microsuck.com.

With Vista Ultimate and now this fine peace of UI they call Windows 7, my trust and liking are growing. I am not a rocket scientist so in my (small) brain I figured out Microsoft knows Windows and threats against it better than the others, so why not give them a try.

A bit funny, really, how my opinion has ghanged since early 2007 and Vista: I´m now more accustomed to use Windows than my "early love" Linux or VAX/VMS which we still used when I studied. I gave OpenOffice away and first time installed MS Office Pro about half a year ago, and today I ended a more than a decade old relationship with Norton.

Nostalgic.

I still hate the fact that they don't have a complete 64bit package. Although, Avast 5 works great on 64bit Windows 7, but in taskmgr, it still shows AvastSvc.exe *32.
BTW, avast 5 looks great so far.

Edit: Action Center is unable to identify avast. LOL.

I believe that if you have the original beta from the first post, you can just update from there, otherwise you can get it here.

Can't give you a changelog, as I don't think they put one out publicly for these betas. Besides, couldn't find it even if they did.



Also, it looks like they are making avast 5.0 to play nice with MSE side by side, which is kind of interesting. I believe from this beta version on...

MSE is just going to remain an Antivirus/Spyware app right? If so it would seem the last thing Avast would do is enable the competition

installed avast....
but windows keep saying it did not find any antivirus..
