Latest version of Avast Antivirus

When it comes to security, the amount of time a scan takes should not even enter into the equation. I am using Avast 5 with MSE and find that its scan time is about the same....

well Tews it is definitely not the same as for a quick scan on Avast takes near 10 minutes and MSE takes half the time and i know time is not a problem as far as security is concerned , i was only wanting to know if it took as long on other peoples systems and i was in yahoo answers and most said that it also took double the time for a quick scan

Hi there, Tews is right. Avast 5 takes about 5 mins for a quick scan; and so MSE.

Well i shall agree to disagree lol

as it does not take anywhere near the same time on mine and before you say it my system is running perfectly well and has 70.9GB free of 101GB

Security essentials quick scan just took 2 mins 14 secs and Avast quick scan only at 25% after 8 mins for a quick scan , so should i uninstall it and load up again

Hello Joeirish, Try utilising the persistent cache. You can read about it in the Help Centre top RH corner of Avast.

I did an initial full system scan which took over 50 minutes, but full system scans after this are less than 5 minutes

so does nobody use Security Essentials or would i be better of uninstalling it and using Avast

I have no problems with running MSE and Avast at the same time on my system.

Brink, may I have your advice: we are often told to have only one anti-virus install (but one can have several anti-malware) so is this ok? thanks

MSE is more if a anti-malware program with antivirus protection to replace Windows Defender, while Avast is a more dedicated antivirus program. That, and better protection since no one scanner can catch everything. MSE and Avast have been certified to work together as well.

Yeah, they are supposed to be able to work without problems, side by side. You can read a small mention here from a few months ago.

With due respect to Brink, I dont think that statement tells the whole story. MSE is perfectly adequate enough to stand on its own protecting against both malware and virii. It was designed to replace One Care system which was discontinued. So it has both the functions of Defender and One Care.

I do not see the need to run two Anti virus programs.

I updated and upon reboot, my wireless mouse and keyboard were DOA... Could not boot into safe mode...totally non-responsive... I ended up having to restore a system image that I made 2 days ago... be careful...forewarned is forearmed....

Yeah, looks like here he is fixing another problem and will update it to another build version anytime I suppose.

Installed and running without issue so far. I've been clean installing these early 5 versions just to be on the safe side so everything goes ok.
