Yea they freeze ?
emails with mabm they didn't comment other that use the mabm clean which I already had,
No issues with any reports they requested mabm working properly,
I don't think they noticed the reports were from 1.75 and not 2.0
2.0 never generated a report it froze,
So I'll stick with 1.75
Life is short and I refuse to live through a scan past 2 hours = kill it/ uninstall it and recover 1.75
I would call that a big problem of a basic operation of a scanner,
Not to mention the failed license transfer/ yea use mabm clean what ever mabm,

I just ran a scan of a few files from the context menu. In v1.75, they would take a few seconds to scan. In v2, they took over a minute, then the program temporarily froze when I tried to exit after the scan had ended. I refrained from instantly going back to v1.75 because I thought I just needed time to settle in with v2, but this has been a very disappointing experience, so I may remove this version soon.

Sorry, my post was not talking about the bsod. I was talking about the multiple other bugs. I understand the testing phase/process quite a bit, and I believe that any decent company should have had this tested better then what was presented here.

I also am seeing bug reports on multiple things on malwarebytes forums that I have been able to reproduce, and have sent in bug reports via email. I get that there are thousands of possible ways for a system to be configured, but some of this stuff was clearly not tested at all. A majority of these bugs is not even caused by third party programs being the reason. Which is another point that eradicates the whole excuse that they didn't have enough users to test.

Scanning is the the whole point of this software, if it cannot even do that well, what is the point?

Also, its pretty bad that in a VM and clean install of windows and just their product, I find TEN bugs in their software by using it for 5 minutes. 10!

I just don't get it. What was malwarebytes thinking here?

I have to agree with Andrew,
This is pretty basic stuff,
Upgrading = failure in allot the licenses being acknowledged protection mode disabled,
Custom scans including rootkit = did no one ever use this

The only solution offered so far as I've seen is use mabm clean ?

I've only been reading this thread - not the threads on the mbam forums - so maybe I missed what you meant by "Custom scans including rootkit = did no one ever use this". Can you please elaborate?

I believe they were referring to the multiple freezing and some files being accidentally skipped when supposedly scanning when this feature is enabled.

I was not aware of your findings. Then yes, they should find any flaw that shows in a clean VM.

Where has it been shown that mbam skipped files that were supposed to be scanned? Hopefully that idea did not come from my posts. I did mention that the GUI skips some files, but the scans seem to have been made per Process Monitor.

Yes, the freezing should have been fixed before releasing v2, but I've yet to see it totally halt. I wonder if they knew about that and opted to release it anyway. Do you know if that issue has been mentioned in their forums?

If it freezes and slows down our PCs, which are generally higher performance, I wonder what the "average" PC is like. I really won't bad mouth MBAM. I have uses it, 1st free, then paid since it 1st appeared. It has been an extraordinary program all that time. If indeed others are experiencing these issues, then I trust they will fix it. My particular BSOD on rootkit scan could be limited to my own machine. I never had any issue with the older version, so that is my expectation for this new one is all. A Guy

I just want to restate that I hope my posts are not coming out as angry or that I am frustrated with anyone here. I am a little frustrated at malwarebytes, but I certainly don't hate them and I think they are a great company. They are listening to users feedback and that is appreciated. I just feel a lot of this could have been avoided if they would have waited to release it.

Someone reported on the MBAM forum they found their scan freeze is caused by moving the USER folder.

My test box has an Old AMD dual core 5600+.
V1 Quick scans were about 2 minutes faster than V2 Threat scans (with Rootkit enabled).
PC is still usable during the scan and no freezes.
I've been using MBAM 2 since pre-Beta on a Win 7 x86 OS ...

For me, V2 is better.
For people I support, I suggest they wait before updating to V2 as there are many issues reported ...

Threat and hyper scans were fine,
Custom full scan was fine,
Rootkit is the issue,
Possibly it's just slower than anything I've ever seen but I don't have a whole lot of files less than 50gig's on this machine,
When I cancel a scan it should do just that,
Not stay exactly where it was stuck at,
I call that freezing = killed it using Task Manager but reopening it just resulted in the same stuck scanner,
Houston we have a problem and it's not my machine,

Just installed the latest version (free). Scan takes a very long time - so long that I aborted the scan and decided to run the scan again overnight. In the morning I awake to find a BSOD caused by MBAM's swissarmy.sys.

Will be removing this latest version until it's confirmed that it's fixed and will work properly. I've only ever used MBAM Anti-Malware as an on demand scanner maybe once per week or so for the last few years just for peace of mind. It's actually never detected any real malware in all that time so i guess my other security measures are working!

Just upgraded from 1.75 to 2.0.1.1104. So far no problems.

However in trying to move the Start menu folder for the product to a "vendor product" folder in the Start menu, I am getting a permissions error preventing that move:

I don't know exactly what I need to do in Properties -> Security for the just-installed MBAM folder in order for me to be able to move it. Whatever I've tried has produced "access denied".

Do I need to "take ownership" of that folder? Of course I'm operating as the one-and-only user on my system, which obviously has Administrator authority.

Never had this problem before with ANY folder created during a product installation, moving it from the general Start menu "root" to one of my sub-folders in the Start menu (to keep things organized).

In MBAM Settings / General Settings make sure Enable self-protection module is unchecked.

Well, I had zero idea what that item was for. In the absence of HELP in the product I assumed it was to enable Chameleon. So yes, I DID have it checked (along with the related item about "early start", whatever that means!!!).

However I've now unchecked them both, and still cannot move the folder from where it is in the Start menu.

I then logged off, and logged on, and STILL get the same permissions error.

I can't re-boot right now (I'm recording the Masters with WMC, and don't want to interrupt it) but if that is what I need to do I'll simply find time later to re-boot. But I would have thought logging off and on would be sufficient, if that's actually tied to why I still get the permissions error even after unchecking these items.

What is the reasoning for moving the Malwarebytes start menu folder?

I simply have structured my Start menu to have about a dozen high-order "categories" folders, into which I move all of the hundreds of individual Windows and vendor product folders and individual shortcuts, in order to minimize the "spread" which occurs when I push the Start button.

I can't stand it when you push Start -> All programs, and 300 items cover your whole desktop and I have to visually locate what I'm looking for. It's much cleaner, simpler, easier to read, and more to my liking, to have this additional high-level "category" of a dozen major Start menu folders, into which everything else has been organized. This way the spread is very small, and always to the point, starting from the appropriate "category" folder.


Anyway, I did not have this problem on my laptop. No problem moving the MBAM folder into my "category" folder. But it was right after a re-boot, and then before attempting the movie I did un-check the two items (same as I did on my desktop machine where this permissions error is occurring). And then the move worked without a peep.

Looking on the Interweb, it does appear that this "self-protection" is indeed meant to prevent components of the products (including desktop shortcuts and Start menu folder) from being deleted/altered (presumably by malware). So it does indeed seem it shouldn't be checked if I want to move the folder.

I tried re-installing (with the current settings having the items unchecked) and still can't move the folder. But then I didn't re-boot in between, which may be necessary.

I don't want to uninstall/reinstall, because I have an existing Pro->Premium lifetime license that I don't want to lose. I simply upgraded-in-place to 2.0.1, and I fear that if I uninstall and reinstall it won't let me activate unless I establish a new payment scheme (rather than grandfathering me in for free).

Anyway, I'll just have to try re-booting later in the afternoon and see if that solves it. It does seem this is the "fix", but it's not working because I haven't yet re-booted.

Checking this box introduces a delay as the self-protection module is enabled. While not a negative, the delay may be considered undesirable by some users. When unchecked, the "early start" option which follows is disabled.
Enable self-protection early start: When the self-protection module is enabled, you may choose to enable or disable this option. When enabled, the self-protection module will become enabled earlier in the computer's boot process — essentially changing the order of services and drivers associated with your computer's startup.

When I click my start menu, I have nothing filling the desktop, maybe I'm not understanding you?
