LED or Plasma TV

My partners plasma TV is on it's last legs an she has been looking at another plasma and me I not impressed with either the performance or longevity of plasma TV screens.

So I would like to get a few comments on which we should buy keeping in mind I am an LCD and LED fan and that I feel the showroom people are just out to sell you the stuff they are not moving too well and maybe the more expensive stuff.

So ideas folks

I prefer a plasma TV, much better contrast, so the black areas in night shots with street lighting are black. Better for watching sport as the response time is quicker. Generally a sharper more natural picture.
I am referring to a Panasonic 50" Viera Plasma TV. Mine is 4 years old & no problems so far.

On the minus side plasma TV's use more power, mine uses between 350 & 450 watts. The higher power consumption occurs on pictures with a lot of white in them. Black & dark scenes use less power. Just a point of interest.

In Nov. 2011 I bought a LG 55LW6500. It was very highly rated at the time. I never had a problem with it.

I wanted to have something which was stingy on power consumption and this one is, as it is full LED.
Average Power Consumption is 159W. It has a great picture.

If this one ever bytes the dust, I would only buy another LED, nothing else. I thought Plasma's were being phased out ?

Plasma TV's ""Generally"" have a better blacks but the performance of LCD screens lit by white LEDs has improved. This is where all the research and development is going. Plasma TV's are be phased out for home use but cannot be beaten in airports, in TV newsrooms etc. They are power hungry and run hot. Pioneer stooped making them several years back and I think Panasonic has done the same. Basically the choice you have is between and LCD lit by LED technology or lit by fluorescent tubes. Having repaired no end of plasma TV's I hate the bloody things and would not give one houseroom. I was once given a 18 month old LG 50" Plasma which needed a new Y drive board and I gave it to a work colleague. They are very heavy and are generally less reliable than LCD screen sets (thunderstorms and kids bashing the screens with toys excepted).

Thanks for all the ideas everyone . On what I see and prefer myself I will probably get her the LED as the 3 year old LCD Sanyo I have at home is perfectly ok for me I am not that real fussy about the finer stuff more of an audiophile than anything.

Plasmas have fallen out of favor. But that means the remaining companies making them (LG, Samsung) have the market to themselves. Larger plasma TVs are lower priced then comparable LCD sets.

LED backlit sets have the ability to have local dimming.

There are flavors of LED sets (edge lit, full array).

Plasma sets will always have a reflective front, whereas LCD sets can have a mat finish screen.

I personally prefer LCD/LED TVs as they are easier to diagnose and fix compared to plasma. I think most of the picture difference can be measured in a lab, but probably won't be as evident in a home environment. Especially since the source is often no optimal.

If you want larger then a 65" set (barring outrageously priced niche sets), you are looking at a LCD set (70", 80", 90").

I vote for LED/LCD too John. Have a look at them in a shop though to decide on one, bearing in mind they have them adjusted to look great in the store.

I did have a older Korean model Samsung TV that I brought from Korea before moving to US which was working fine until it started to take forever until turning on and showed odd screens.(Must have been the step up transformer that had fluctuating voltages)

Yep I know all about them Bill I had one explode once in a vacuum tube stereo amplifier I built and it was totally destroyed with only the soldered in contacts being left on the metal frame (before PCB's were common place) plus all of the tubes were smashed and other components either bent or burnt.

My mum didn't take too kindly of the snow storm in my bedroom that resulted as there were the tiniest pieces of paper and metal fragments everywhere LOL!!

Mind you it was just as well I was facing away from the build when the dual smoothing caps let go simultaneously!! or I could have been seriously burnt or had my eyes put out.

I have changed hundreds, if not thousands, of caps on Samsung power supplies. They actually covered that repair (or replacement of power supply if needed) until recently. They aren't the only one, but if you say long time to turn on, click, click, click, it's 99% caps. A Guy

Yes, it will exhibit all kinds of video, and/or audio issues until the caps "pump up". Once on, the set does not use those caps. They are part of the start up circuit. The set will play indefinitely once on. if you turn it off for a while, it will go through the same behavior again. A Guy
