I reciently purchased a copy of Windows 7 family pack. I loaded it on 3 computers. One of those computers is showing some age and I decided it was time to replace it. The hard drive with "7" installed is new. I plan to build a new computer and install the existing hard drive in the new computer. The old computer will be wiped of the "7" operating system and sold. My question, is can this be done without too much of a problem? I'd rather not purchase a new copy of "7" if I don't have to for the new computer. The old computer will be completely wiped and if the recovery disk will work will be loaded with Windows XP Media before sale.

You can run three copies legally, and I think the EULA says they should all be at the same address.

That's all there is to it... ;)

From the actual MS EULA.

Family Pack. If you are a “Qualified Family Pack User”, you may install one copy of the software marked as “Family Pack” on three computers in your household for use by people who reside there. Those computers are the “licensed computers” and are subject to these license terms. I wonder how they enforce "household." ISP?

Does anyone know?

I've heard from several who split them up with friends.

And even better, what if I load my kids computer with a legal copy from the Family Pack and then moves out in 6 months?

Hope not because what if one of the comps was a laptop and you tried to update at a friends house?

Legal copy of "7" ???

First , I'd like to thank everyone for the hasty replies. I really do appreciate the help but the term "licensed computers" is what is concerns me. My plan is to delete one computer, a Sony Vaio and replace it with another. The hard drive will be the same but everything else will be new. I fear this will send "Red Flags" up everywhere. I'd rather not complete the project and have Microsoft tell me I can not do this. I can see where they could possibly void my license for all three computers.

If they do there will suddenly be a lot of questions about VPN tunnelling... :p

I think that as long as only 3 computers are activated and connected you will be fine... I dont think that the MS Police are going to come to your door... lol..

I don't have a Family Pack license, but I imagine that it's like the other licenses. You will probably need to activate the new machine by phone. The right answer as to how many machines you have the OS installed on will be 3, rtaher than one for a single retail license. The worst case: you'll have to speak to a live person. (Not painful, just taking a little more time.)

I've heard from several who split them up with friends.

It is my opinion that these are just marketing schemes, to get the price where people will actually buy the system, without having to "offically" lower the price. In addition, they do sell some at the list price. Personally, I bought mine during the pre order, for $49.99
