So I have a Samsung Windows 7 laptop. Pretty sure it's 64bit, I would love to tell more, but I can't boot windows to find out more. I'm in a start up repair loop, where it constantly tells me it can't boot windows, runs the repair, says it can't repair due to a disk problem (recalling from memory, please bear with possible misquoting.) I've occasionally been able to open up cmd and tried everything I could. I can't open a dir of C:\ which is my system drive, it just says file not found. I tried the sfc thing but it says there's a repair in progress please reboot and try again. Thing is, I can only open cmd from the additional options of the system repair. Which is the only thing I can ever bring up. Cant open Safe Mode or anything. I was able to bring up a dir of my D:\ drive which was just a 2nd drive I used to install games. uhhh... I don't really know what else to put. If anyone needs any other info, please tell me how to find it and I will gladly give it to you. I'm not a tech guy, but I understand some of it. (I think.) Oh yeah, and the additional options for System Reset/Restore won't work. For some reason my restore points are gone. And I don't have any sort of recovery or installation disks, coupled with being cripplingly poor. So I don't think I can afford any anytime soon. Any ideas?

(Final note: Not worried about any data on the lappy. I planned on factory resetting or whatnot once it was working anyway. So any way I can get it working is fine, data preservation not a big deal.)

So you can start "windows repair". After "startup repair" finishes you can click on "view diagnostics details" (or something alike). Clcik on it. What tests ended with status not equal to 0x0 (which is "no problem") and what is the status code?

Thing is, I can only open cmd from the additional options of the system repair
Do that and then do:
Code:
dir c:\users
dir d:\users
dir e:\users

Which of the 3 lists the users accounts?

It'll be another hour before the repair completes for the diag details, however I did the cmd command and it pulled up File Not Found for both C and D drives. E drive pulled up Administrator, DefaultAppPool, HomeGroupUser$, Guest, Matt, Prophet, Public. Prophet's my profile, who's Matt? And for the full post I'll need to run the repair again and I'll let ya know. thanks man. Most progress I've had all day and so far it was just one command line lol.

So E is drive letter of win7. I don't know who Matt is.

It's most likely the checkdisk that takes so long(?)
Please do:
Code:
chkdsk/f C:
any errors? All repaired? Maybe do it twice to see if all errors are repaired!
Code:
chkdsk/f E:
Any errors? All repaired? Maybe do it twice to see if all errors are repaired!

If disks didn't gave any errors:
Code:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir[B]=[COLOR=blue]E[/COLOR]:[/B]\ /offwindir=[B][COLOR=blue]E[/COLOR][/B]:\windows
Post results

A hard disk problem is preventing windows from starting. I got pixs for the chkdsk on the c dr. Unfortunately only one third of my screen is visible. My lappy has been through a good deal and screen is worn. So the pic is in 3. Sorry for that. And the chkdsk for the e drive is saying this : chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. Would you like to force a dismount?

I will run the sfc shortly.

The chkdsk is running now, That was the entire error message for the sfc. It said Beginning System Scan this process will take some time. A few seconds later it reads, Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. And I was back to being able to input commands.

You did chkdsk/f E: ?
Still busy? A lot of errors? Or does it say somewhere at the end (just before the summary) something like "completed without errors" ?

It's still going on right now, it's "replacing bad clusters." I'll post pics of it as soon as it's done. Hopefully in an order that you can just read them rather than the jumbled mess above.

You aren't funny at all ;-)

Many bad blocks. Run the command again. No more disk errors? Reboot and do it again.. no more disk errors?
