Life after Vista

Hi forum,
Have just had a "clean" install of Windows 7 from the Upgrade disc and I am just going to air my comments.
I decided to let a technician do the job for me in spite of all the good advice from the forum about how to do it. It went a treat, thankfully and only cost a few euros.
First impressions....hated the garish backgrounds and finally settled for a nice even deep blue screen. First hiccup..back-up from Vista failed but I had luckily put a lot of music, financial reports and pictures onto a memory stick two months ago. I have lost a couple of month's reports,however but I can guess at the figures. Like new shoes (or dentures) 7 takes some getting used to and I had to hunt for some drivers too. To tell the truth I should have gladly re-installed Vista at this stage (I still have it on a recovery partition) but I think I was getting a little cloudy in my thinking and not relaxing into the system more.
A couple of hours later I am absolutely delighted with the system and the speed at which it operates is amazing (particularly after Vista) and I dare say, as the technician told me, that,in a week or so, the whole thing will grow on me. I have still a lot to learn about it yet. So the future looks bright after a rather strange start to the change.

Here is another lesson learned about Windows backup - it just does not work. I have stopped using it long time ago. Any manual approach is better.

I felt the same when I moved from XP to Vista.

As for Vista to 7, what's Vista?

Have a good look through the Tutorials threads, there's masses of good stuff in there from our resident author, Brink. In the meantime, if there's anything you want to know, just ask away.

Unlike ..your first Impression ... I love wds7 the first minute I installed it ..
After 1 painful year with Darm Vista ...i'm a happy camper now ...

Here is another lesson learned about Windows backup - it just does not work. I have stopped using it long time ago. Any manual approach is better.

If I understand you correctly, you are saying dont put too much faith in Paragon or Macrium Backups to reinstall.

I remember when I first bought a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. Being a Windows XP user for years, and sometimes using Windows Vista when using my cousin's laptop, I was glad that I finally could use an operating system that is really efficient, but there were many things I encountered in Windows 7 that I disliked, especially the taskbar. I hated how the windows were bunched up in a square in the taskbar if you had a few windows open that were using the same program.
After a while, maybe a week or two, I got used to it. After a month, I loved all the new features and changes in Windows 7!

If I understand you correctly, you are saying dont put too much faith in Paragon or Macrium Backups to reinstall.

Not at all Rich. I am saying that the Windows native facilities are iffy. But Paragon and Macrium are reliable - I never had any problems with those.

But if you want to only backup a few user files, you might as well copy them manually. Although I have a seperate user data partition that I image also.

I have to agree and this is only my second day with 7. What first disenchanted me was the absolutely awful array of garish desktop backgrounds.. some completely hiding desktop icons. I finally settled for a beautiful deep blue background without anything on it. Call me unimaginative but this just suits me.

But if you want to only backup a few user files, you might as well copy them manually. Although I have a seperate user data partition that I image also.

Surely the new Disc Imaging Back-up in Win7 is fine though I do agree that Back-up in Vista was virtually non-existent. I lost everything I backed up using this prior to Win7. I was lucky that I had a manual back-up completed albeit a couple of months out of date.......however.

Those of us who are paranoid about backups use both seven's own backup plus another such as Macrium or Paragon.

I use Macrium and Paragon - the free editions. And sometimes I backup my data partitions with Wbadmin - just for the fun of it. But I have not yet figured out how to do a recovery from the Wbadmin VHDs in Win7. The recovery facility seems to only exist in Server 2008. But you can mount the VHDs and pick the data folders manually.
