LimeWire file-sharing service shut down by US court

October 26, 2010 -- Popular online file-sharing service LimeWire was shut down by a US federal court on Tuesday following a lawsuit filed by the music industry.

The move came a little more than five months after a US judge ruled in favor of 13 music companies in a copyright infringement and unfair competition case brought against LimeWire.

LimeWire.com featured a legal notice on its home page on Tuesday stating it was "under a court-ordered injunction to stop distributing and supporting its file-sharing software."

The legal notice linked to the court order from US District Court Judge Kimba Wood ordering the closure of the service.

I don't know, Capt.Jack. However, when they do, I know we'll see fewer people needing help in the security forums. Many of the security forums require all P2P programs to be uninstalled before assistance will be provided.

Yup .. That's true ! LimeWire and Kaaza sends out lot of virus. I had one customer got infected after installing Kaaza finally wiped everything out and did a Clean Install.

If you know what you're doing, you shouldn't be getting infected at all. I know there's keyloggers among other things hidden deep in stuff but still, you should know what you're doing before you torrent stuff

This ruling is of course against the distribution of the limewire software, the actual network has never been under the control of the company. This action will not actually stop the use of the P2P network, or indeed the copies of limewire software already in use.

The other issue with this action is that it does not stop any other company from filling the void in P2P software that is now present, and I believe that other software is already in place anticipating this outcome.

I do not know how this particular problem can be solved without such draconian measures as to seriously damage the usability of the internet, due to the need to check every packet transmitted for content

Limewire, Kazaa, and Bearshare incurred malware and viruses account for probably 40% of the builds that return to me as "broken." I am NOT sorry at all to see it go.

On the other hand...I'll earn less money cleaning Viruses from machines as Limewire was the biggest contributor. Hmmm, gonna have to think of something else now

I've never used Limewire so I don't feel anything regarding it got shut down.

But I'd feel something should Torrent sites meet the same fate. xD

+1, there's no real security in P2P, regardless of how carefull people are there will still be attacks.

I wonder would it be possible for theam to shut down torrent sites? I mean ya you can shut down major ones like pirate bay but im talking about shutting theam all down cause people could just make new torrents correct

No this is not good news.
Torrent sites themselves are not responsible for illeagal file sharing..it is the individual who has made the file available for the P2P network, and the other individuals who make up the swarm and share it back out.
Same with viruses, it is not the fault of Kazaa et al.

Do we stop Ford manufacturing cars, because of illeagal activity in one of their motors?

Those of us who use P2P for legit purposes will be hit.
