Limewire Shut Down

I'm not justifying pirating, I'm pointing out that loyal customers buy and get crap in return. Are they so blind and cannot see that there is a reason why people pirate.

People pirate because they are cheap (or would rather spend their money elsewhere), and think that companies and artists are way too overpaid as it is. Are you SERIOUSLY going to suggest that if there was no "crap" or there had never been any "crap", that pirating would not still be an issue? Get real. That's just an attempt to justify behavior.
My view and how I saw, you think that I don't know why people pirate? I'm not an idiot if that's what you mean. People do pirate because they're too lazy to buy or simply do not have money. By "crap", I mean the entire DVD is loaded with unskipable adverts and meaningless warning for a legitimate customer. Piracy will always exist regardless of any change. Also, you don't seem to understand, I do not justify piracy.

I think the main motivation for piracy is... It's Easy! This has very little to do with the cost of a DVD (which, in the great scheme of things, is not that bad), or with the annoying Hard Sell included with every DVD of high enough profile. A 9-year old can do it from their computer -- bingo, instant Avatar! --GPR

I believe that cost really is a factor, though. I doubt that the average pirater is willing to shell out the amount of money I have for music and movies. I have an appx. 5x4 bookshelf stuffed with DVD's, as well as 9x 50 capacity cases, most of which are full. I have two 128 capacity cd binders full of CD's, and another one for games. I could count them, but I think the total cost is several thousand dollars. Shows are what kill me, I love them, and they are expensive. (but I save a bundle on cable :P)

It's on it's way to epicness :D

As for the servers, are these US based or international? US courts only have jurisdiction in the US which is always a problem for attempted policing of the Net

I'd say they are on international sites somewhere overseas but it looks like there are still a few US servers dishing out the latest version.

I mean limewire is huge and has servers all over the world, I wonder how they will stop that. :sarc:

Oh well, the thread is still entertaining anyway. :D

Out of interest I did check out the situation with limewire availability myself and although the actual company site is blocked as stated in Corrine's first post, the second site that Google led me to reported that the site was down due to the injunction and then proceeded to list five alternative programs that did the same thing as Limewire and were still available for download.

I think this illustrates better than any words I can think of, how entrenched into modern internet society P2P file sharing is and how much of an uphill tasks the content providers have

From your statement you are saying either you or they don't understand why people pirate. So the inference is that one of the parties you are referring to are idiots.

I assume they know that removing the ads will not won't make any difference in pirating. To quote you again:

"Are they so blind and cannot see that there is a reason why people pirate". The reason 99.5% of people pirate is to not pay, advertising or "crap" doesn't fit into the equation.

You nailed it.

Well ignoring the 9 year old downloading an avatar. The typical pirating adult, decides between following the law, as he well knows it exists, and instead of signing up at a site to pay and download movies legally, which is just as easy to download from once you sign up, and instead chooses to do it illegally, and cost has nothing to do with it? Okay, you convinced me.

Filefactory, Fileden, megaupload, mediafire, filestube, uploading, rapidshare, hotfile, fileserve...I've found all this sites with one google search. And all of them provide file uploading (movie size) and direct downloading. Limewire is down, what about this sites? There is no end of them. Torrent search is even more amazing. This days, with high speed internet its very easy for someone to upload and share a movie or an album or whatever. Its hard to believe that someone can stop it. Yes, it's illegal, but human nature and psychology are so amazing...

And yes, its same if one shares file with his/her friends or doing the same thing by uploading that file to particular site or torrent. Why? Couse sharing that file with the friends doesn't end there. Friends have friends that have friends....So, thinking that oh, its ok, I'll copy this movie to my friend, its not a big deal right? He'll not share it with his friends (maybe), or whatever excuse one can find to justify him self for doing it, doesn't makes him/her criminal? I mean, of course its way slower then torrents or direct download sites, but eventually it'll spread. And how many people will do the same thing with their friends? This issue right now is unsolvable, doesn't matter how much time will argue about it, so just let me to:

Where did so many people get the idea that stealing is okay if you use the internet. Another one, it's okay because you are stealing from companies that have lots of money. It's okay to steal because lots of other people do it. When they shut Limewire down I will just find another way to steal on the internet. Who raised these people?

Well, Frostwire, which is a derivative of Limewire is still up for downloads. It's basically Limewire Pro, but free and blue instead of green. That being said, what people misinterpret is that Limewire doesn't host anything; it merely connects to the Gnutella network. That network is still up.
