Well I only have three brain cell and it doesn't take them long to warm up.

Because whs has so much happiness with Linux I have tried them several times. Once in VM and the rest of the time on their own ssd with dual boot.

Just a week or so ago I spent hours just try to stop Linux from screwing with my bios time. I tried Zorin and Mint Cinnamon.
I did the things the forum said to fix the problem and nothing helped.
I got all the right read outs but it still didn't fix the problem. If I can't keep Linux from messing with my bois I'm not going to spend a lot of time trying out Linux to learn how it works.

I solved the problem by formatting the ssd and formatting the usb and wipe the usb stick with zeros.
Maybe I need one more brain cell. That could be the problem.

I will try Linux later if I get in the mood and add another brain cell.

Linux to me is like a lot of other things that are just as good or better that Microsoft product. The just as good products are free. Another example would be Open Office.

Here is where the thinking part comes in.
If such things are free and just as good as Microsoft products why isn't everybody using them?

Most people are terrified of computers.
They would be too scared to attempt to install Windows or a Linux Distro, even though OS installs are probably easier than certain software suites.

Why would Microsoft waist the time and money to do such a thing? They have got W-10 to fix.

If MS wanted to they could probably find someone who'd do it for "chump change".
I suspect that there are people who'd do it for free.

Notoriously! :roflmao: The VM on Hyper-V is the LMDE 17.2 seen there along with a 7 VM. On he 7 side however I have the two 10 Pro and 17.3 LM ubuntu based that had just been downloaded before this new came along but at one of the US mirrors.

Installing a rare program which is not available from the Software Manager is one of those cases. But how often do you do that. And for what purpose do you want to install BitDefender.

The Software Manager is always the fun part when you are not simply able to use that on everything. If I had seen another distro custom installed on the second OS drive as I did an earlier release of the LM Debian flavor on a physical drive I would use the VMware Linux installer to get the Workstation Player in order to run a Windows vm. Still the SM in the Debian flavor has some 200 optional packages to choose from there while not seeing as many as the ubuntu flavored LM.

You might be surprised to learn that there are far more bugs out there for Linux then you would assume! In fact one optional item for the av program here is to extend the protections to VMs as well as the scans on the local system itself.

I know that there are pieces of malware for Linux. But the threat is still low compared to Windows. Nevertheless it is always good to be alert.

Virus developers too found linux as unworthy to make a virus for it. Why will they plan to attack on such a microscopic userbase by spending a time? Well, they are rational.

Statistics support this statement.
As per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems, 83.06% people use Windows and 1.47% use Linux.

Let us assume that Only Windows users use Antivirus. Hence the 3.2% represents 3.2% of 83.06% which is 2.66% actually for all computer users.

As 2.66% is higher than 1.47%, we may conclude that the above statement of Barman58 is correct, Bitdefender is having more userbase than Linux.

One major issue is playing protected content. Debian 8 is the worse, they mad it almost impossible to install hal. It makes it almost impossible to watch protected content. Installing Google Chrome does work for some in Debian. In Linux Mint, you still need to install the unofficial hal ppa even with Google Chrome installed. What worse is Google Chrome won't support 32 bit Linux systems any more. Luckily you can use Chromium with a tweak to play protected content,

I wouldn't caught at this late date even running anything 32bit unless I have to see a repair done on someone else machine! The main reason the 32bit side hasn't already been abolished is due to the 32bit saturation in the software market well before the 64bit flavor of Windows as well as the others having already started first seen in Server 2003 and XP Pro 2003 the same year the XP Media Center Edition x86 naturally came out.

With all that 32bit stuff still in use the 64bit OS still has to see 32bit emulation as far as Windows is concerned while Googlitis or something open source remains up to the developers in those areas. You have to remember Chrome is Google's pet there!

Now when taking a good look at the graphs Arc has there it's not one bit of a surprise still seeing 7 at the very top of the list! :roflmao: Before 10 came along that was the one time MS got it right!!! 7 took off from the start in contrast to how people the XP lingerers hanging onto the now DOA XP had been forced to remain using XP and why MS pushed "8mares" out ahead of correcting just a few things in 8.1 and now has to get back to working their tails off to make something better out of 10! MS is also working faster taking in more feedback lately then I think even 7 saw originally explaining a totally new build with fixes seen within a week's time!

The latest Windows Insider blog points that one out by how it addressed seeing the bugs fixed right away. That in itself is a huge contrast to how MS had fumbled the ball over the last two decades at times! But the fact are that only Die Hard Linux users will be seen making up the bulk of the actual percentage of users for that OS.

Yet the open source browsers on the other hand are the most popular and most often used for those have preferences in contrast to the novices that only check the mail and browser the web. So when comparing statistics you also need to look at dividing those down even further into the separate categories.

As far as security that is the common denominator with all OSs regardless! The upload of polluted isos onto the LM servers show Linux isn't so safe either while many will claim that! These malware writers and hackers are mostly Pros with programming to begin with while some novice hackers or students in programming are likely to breach things at times as well. On the web itself it won't matter which OS you are at times when you run smack into some type of scam site! Many will appear to be legit vendors and take your money!

One possible reason behind the incident is as follows

• Very few people just run Linux
• Most will also run Windows the industry standard
• A lot will run Linux in a dual boot environment
• A lot, (too many?) users settle for a single password for everything
• Linux Mint is spouted as the closest to a windows look and feel and so attracts windows users
• The Mint security was obviously a joke due to the myth of safety held by linux users
• Now the "hackers" have lots of infected machines and user passwords that they can use to take control of Both Linux and Windows installs

What I would suggest is that anyone that has installed Linux Mint in the last year, (they say it was one day only, but we all know how "Honest" OS developers can be when the truth could affect the bottom line), seriously consider changing their password on everything no matter what OS they use

Good observation! Barman58 The same of course would also apply to anyone who has enabled the hidden system administrator account in Windows as well. A random password every so often adds a layer of additional security as a precaution to be taken on individual machines.

Don't forget one thing! If you get hacked your contacts are then exposed as well to possible future attacks. As for master passwords that is one option you find mostly in FF or most other open source browsers with the exception of IE and now Edge in 10 not seeing any such thing! Having a master password for everything while "CONVENIENT" for many is a high security risk especially when you could end up with some type of keylogger malware if your system protections are not adequate.

The regular LM here which is ubuntu based and the highest probable target is only seen on a VM while the Debian based which is harder to work with actually is also on a couple of VMs between the testing build and the main as well as having seen custom installs to flash drives turned into live data recovery sticks but not for web browsing in general. Most of the time if pulled for data recovery ops it wouldn't be able to connect to the web anyways for those while people who dual boot regularly would be the ones who see the higher risk factors.

After a look at the 8 CP proved to be another type of problem I did see that split of the second OS drive with a 100gb primary up front take a full Mint install for a short period of time until simply setting it aside to allow for any new OS to be looked such as what would be the next Windows beta? That Linux install certainly didn't see much use while on!

I come across as Anti-Linux, which I am, but this is due to personal research, not just taking the words of self serving bloggers as truth.

I actually ran a small network for a year on Ubuntu (the number one at the time), and using only Open source and freeware apps on the machines - this was done as an experiment to see if it was viable for cash strapped clients, (mostly charitable sector).

Unfortunately users hated it but not due to the changes in the look and feel but due to having to interact with the rest of the Eco-structure.

Whilst an emailed Word Doc file was readable but took a fair bit of work to "convert it" from the "Free" word processor's interpretation to what it was actually written as, in Word - this extra work was a killer as the overall cost of the extra work exceeded the savings from not purchasing windows software.

Also the functionality of the free software is always several iterations behind the windows version - take a look at using Gimp to replace Photoshop, not gonna happen
