I can easily identify with your reasons there! Regardless of how many times I look at one distro's newer release or try out the variety of "flavors" there's only place I keep ending up at.... Windows!!! The Geek's OS label years back was the most appropiate term applied when you take a good look at how awkward things can be at times with the other OSs in general let alone the Congressional Library of Linux Flavors Institute!

When setting up a number of VMs to get familiarized with the changes seen in the latest MS offering getting around is found to be far less complicated then trying to get things going in the latest flavor! What does that show? A severe lack of confidence in the other OSs is what that amounts to!

Even with Windows apps like any freeware you run across out on the web you can encounter "crap app"! at times and simply want to get it off of your machine ASAP without question! That's mostly from poorly written rather then difficulty to use complications however! The crap app will freeze or if something on the idea of WordPad or Sumatra replacing Adobe Reader but not written anywhere near as good as Sumatra you have a disaster app on your hands.

As far as general use however 10yr. old kids can pick up fast on how to work things in Windows while experienced users like yourself will likely end up tossing a machine out the window due to frustrations with the other guy's OS not having been refined far enough to be considered "User Friendly"! for most of us! This is why Linux Mint's own populariry grew by word of mouth mostly about how much easier it was being intentionally made to draw more Windows users to it to begin with. And as we just saw no pre thoughts about the need to still keep things secured properly was the end result! Sad but this is another example of where many that do use have been too confident about not worrying at all.

Right now I am triple booting
Windows 7 64 bit- I still haven't decided if I want to get rid of windows 7 and use Windows 10 32 bit. I am mixed
Lubuntu 64 bit with xfce 4.10 desktop (there is a reason I use Lubuntu instead of Xubuntu see my pchelpforum post)
Debian 8 xfce 64 bit non-free with cinnamon, kde and maybe mate desktops. I am just playing around with Debian. I was hopping to use it as replacement but very difficult to add some third party software

What I want to have on my system
Windows 7 64 bit
Windows 10 32 bit for 16 bit software (Already tested and works)
A Linux distro 64 bit with wine 32 support for windows 16 bit software that doesn't work in 10 & maybe some privacy.

It's too bad Mint got hacked, but we all know that nothing is hackproof. I run Mint 17.2 so I'm ok. But I use Zorin most of the time. On it now. The only time I use Windows is when I work on my music. I need Windows for my DAW, Sonar. But in time, I may be able to use a Linux-based DAW.

Interesting how this forum has suddenly turned into a Linux-bashing fest. The defensiveness of you windows defenders is very revealing.

Perhaps a little more "Tack" in how you express yourself will get you a bit further! As far as simply coming out and saying "Linux is a Bad OS!" which no one has actually claimed that. But on the other hand has explained how awkward it can be for the novice or user of some other OS such what else but the Windows OS!

Example? At the moment having downloaded the Linux flavor of the latest VMware Workstation Player you have a "bundle" that you can't right click on to merge! There are no "exe" files in Linux which are generally a simple click away from seeing a new program installed. The Software Manager only sees stuff from a Linux server as far as a lenthy list of apps which include a few listings for VirtualBox which doesn't quite offer enough since VMware is a commercial program.

Presently installing 17.3 to get all that straightened out! Running a distro live seems easy at first until you realize oops! You can only put things on only after a regular full install of the OS is seen. This is also why the data recovery sticks saw full installs to those to get around any loop holes if something came up where some app had to be used.

Since the VM had to be wiped internally since the 60gb only left 9gb the installer will work live and nuke the download being the only thing that will need to be downloaded again. Besides the VBox option another enticement has been a variant of Wine which allows the user to run Windows programs. Have to toss some eye candy in there to get noticed! It does but when trying to make some of the usual changes you suddenly realize you are in an entirely different ball park despite the lean towards the Windows familiarity.

As for the other subject of name calling that steps out of bounds as a general rule of thought since most places will only tolerant so much. Different the varying opinions either pro or con on things showing a degree of common courtesy is the golden rule. Some things are simply best to drop entirely!

We have always embraced other operating systems on Designer Media Sites.

This should, however, be limited to where it interacts with the Microsoft Operating system that the site applies to

Although I use "Linux" in this post this could equally apply to things such as Mac OSx, IOS Windows XP, 8.1 10 etc

This is a Windows forum and should concentrate on help and support for Windows, and more specifically Windows 7

Your comment earlier about "preferences" is actually a statement that was right on the money as far as each user having their own Each will have their own experiences good or bad regardless of which OS they are working with. If you run it long enough something will always break? or may not even go on!

With the VMware problem the bundle you download for Linux lacks a package installer and the GDeb package installer in LM continues to come up with an error stating either there isn't enough permissions or....? The terminal method was also looked at but... But if you are wanting some program in Windows a fast double click on the exe file gets you there in a hurry!

For me I will simply put it aside for the moment knowing I will get back to it and find a solution while for the next user to come along the patience could grow very thin and simply end up seeing that user call it quits since the VMware support information was rather vague to begin with for their own software while straight out instructions easy to follow for.... Windows and Mac were plain and simple!

It doesn't take rocket science to figure which way the primarily Windows user will turn! And just like the original first looks at the LMDE as well as the LMUbuntuEdition or LMUE as it should be abbreviated the Software Manager and Software Sources with the nice face plate gui look fabulous and very familiar to the Windows user at first and why LM is considered the easy distro you can get stuck royally on trying to see things go manually!

And you can see why that 7yr. Linux user friend simply told me "Stick with Windows!" which is the general route I take anyways! It still gets the "Geek's OS" tag regardless of the prepackaged options! For the ppa option you need a url as another alternate route to take in order to get a package installed.

Actually ......... I'm feeling kind of bad for starting this thread. I never meant for it to lead to all this acrimony amongst us. Just thought it was "newsy" for those of us who love all things pertaining to computers.
