Solved Logitech Z205 laptop speakers

Hi everyone, was hoping for some help with my Logitech Z205 laptop speakers that have suddenly stopped working - these work directly from any USB port and normally just enhance the sound from the thin sounding laptop speakers. Recently just plugging them in produced no sound just a slight background hiss so I plugged into different ports on the same laptop and on a different laptop, changed the cable, still no sound. Went into device manager where it was recognized, tried uninstalling, re-installing, enable/ disable with no change. When I go into playback devices and see the device, the sound test works and if I plug in the separate 3.5mm audio jack they work so I am confident it is not the actual speakers that are dead and more of a software/ driver issue.

I am running Win 7 home premium on an Acer Aspire laptop.

Any suggestions would be most welcome, thanks.

Have you tried plugging the speakers into a different pc and trying them out?

Is the speakers set as the default audio device?

That sounds like something has happened to the speakers, since you have tried them in two different PC's and neither worked.

The speakers can either operate from USB for both power and sound or USB for power and use a 3.5mm audio cable to connect to an audio out such as a PC, iPod, etc. That is about all I could find about these as they have been discontinued by Logitech and no documentation is available on the Logitech site.

Hi, thanks for your reply - yes, I did try on another laptop with same result. However I uninstalled and re-installed on that one and it worked but hadn't worked on the first laptop so I ended up copying the driver files from the second to the first laptop, although they looked identical, and hey presto working again (possible corruption of the driver ?).

In conclusion, I have no idea why it stopped working and, how the above fixed it... !!!!

If it happens again, the correct way to uninstall/reinstall is: (1) connect the speakers (2) go to the device manager and uninstall the speakers in the device manager (3) disconnect the speakers from the PC (4) restart the PC (5) after Windows starts, connect the speakers and Windows should detect these as "new hardware" and install them.

This usually fixes Windows corruptions between a device (any device) and Windows.
