Lose sound after 10 seconds...

Hey all,

I have an Inca 88 sound card (PCI, 8 in/8out recording soundcard, considered legacy at this point)

I install the drivers fine, and sound comes right away, but I lose sound about ten seconds afterward. The only way to get sound back is to uninstall the drivers, then re-do it.

While I have sound, it comes occasionally crackly. I changed the power settings option for minimum CPU to 100% as per advice in another thread, but no dice.

Can anything think of why it may be doing it?

New drivers are not an option, as the last ones are XP drivers from 2004. On Vista it worked fine, and I -DO- get sound (kinda) now, so I imagine it being something other than the drivers.

Some say that disabling internal audio in the BIOS is a good idea, I'm not so sure about that in your case.

I've tried two PCI cards in my machine, an RME ADAT 8 In/Out and an M-Audio 24/96 Audiophile. Both have worked well, I have internal audio enabled, however... I do not use the PCI card(s) for any type of system/game audio, they function only in the recording software. All other audio uses the internal motherboard sound, that's one possibility.

The other possibility is to try using a different PCI slot, if you don't have one available swap the audio card with another PCI device.

Windows 7 seems to have a pretty thick "system" layer over top of the audio, I haven't quite figured out what they're doing... I know that Win-7 (maybe Vistas did too) supports system wide effects.

Aphelion, I have the internal audio turned off and I just switched PCI slots, but no avail. Good advice though!

It installs the drivers just fine (I even hear the "beep, beep beep!" as it adds each channel, but then it still cuts out a few seconds afterward.

I've noticed that when I shut down, Windows 7 says "waiting for 'task host something-something' to end". I'm going to assume that it is the program that is conflicting with the audio.

Any other suggestions? I'm going to use on-board audio for now, but I really need this to work... we record next week!

This is going to be rough, the driver's haven't been updated in 7-8 years.

I took a quick look at the Audiotrak site, have you tried both version 3 drivers posted?

Probably a wild goose chase as it's very likely a driver/OS conflict.

Are you comfortable with using task manager to shut down processes and device manager to disable/enable devices? I can think of 4 or 5 things to try if you wish to give it a shot.

What do you have running in the background, any specific programs you've installed that run background services or processes?

Open System Information, go to Hardware Resources and IRQ.

What devices is the Inca 88 sharing IRQs with?

Aphelion - Thank you so much for the help so far. I really appreciate it.

I am definitely comfortable with task manager. I won't be home until Friday so I'll post then, but I don't remember there being any IRQ conflicts. It is also a fresh install of Windows 7 - I only have two antivirus programs on it (AVG and malware bytes), Office, Adobe Reader Pro and Steam.
