After countless searches I finally decided to post here as Im about to give up.

My computer shut down suddenly and upon powering it, it says windows must do start up repair. Whenever start up repair is initiated, it just says searching for problems and does that forever (well ive left it overnight and still the same). Ive tried safe mode and all that but it never loads unfortunately.

I've created a system recovery disk but everytime I boot with it and after I select language, it says searching for windows installations and again that goes on forever. I've got ahold of Win 7 USB install and when I attempt to repair computer, i'm once again hit with the searching for windows installations popup. I do have access to command prompt through the win 7 install (by pressing ALT+F10 as soon as it boots up).

Any ideas are welcome, I just dont want to lose the files on the hardrive. The computer itself is 5 years old, but hasnt given me any major problems in the past. Thanks I will be up rest of the night trying to gain access back into my computer.

Hello and welcome trunkstt mate use this for recovering the data you need

BOOTABLE UBUNTU

Make a bootable Ubuntu disk http://www.ubuntu.com/download

Set the BIOSto boot from the optical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL >select TRY.You can of course remove the hard driveand any other drives when doing this as if the optical alone is the only driveleft in the machine then the BIOS willonly find it to boot from.

When it isfinished - it takes very little time you will get a screen like in the pic .

Open thedrive you want > User and dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy / paste the materialyou want to an external source or other installed drive doing this.

I have recovered tons of data etc using this method both on"dead" or just plain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.

Then use this for a really fresh install of Windows be sure to get the version you have as some get greedy and up with grief ++++

PS meant to add if you prefer you can use a USB stick for the Ubuntu - same for the ISO
