Solved major download problems with firefox

I am having major problems downloading anything in firefox, images, updates, any kind of download fails.

I am having no problems with the other browser I use ... chrome

This is the pop up I get when downloading

One strange thing that is occuring is that I cannot change the default download folder in firefox. I created a new folder called downloads_2, go into firefox settings browse to that folder and select it, but firefox wont change to the new folder I selected. Its odd, because no where is there a setting that says apply.



Here is other things I have tried so far....
-close firewall and virus protection
-disable all add ons and extensions
-cleared download history
-did a complete uninstall of firefox and then reinstalled.

Any help would be appreciated, I've always prefered firefox, but this makes it unusable to me

In the Alert the .exe.part is a partial file that has not completed.
Did you uninstall FF using its default uninstall or use Windows 7 uninstall programs?
I use IOBit Uninstaller as it gets all pieces left over in the registry also.
Also try clicking on FF/tools/options 'always ask me where to save files' and see if that will allow
it to go in the proper folder.
I just received and installed FF ESR 38.5.1 minutes ago. Looks OK. (nothing to do with your prob)
You may also try the manual uninstall of FF:
Manual firefox removal:
First, restart your pc, and press F8 to enter the safe mode on bootup
Then try to delete the things below:
1. Terminate Mozilla Firefox process.
2. Delete Mozilla Firefox files.
3. Delete Mozilla Firefox directories.
4. Delete Mozilla Firefox shortcut.
5. Delete Mozilla Firefox registry keys and values.
(Be careful while in the registry. One slip and you fall on your ass-prin bottle.)

That partial download file DOES NOT belong to FF.

Suggest you go
C: Program files And
C: Program files (X86)
and delete all folders for FF.
clear all your temp files using TFC.
Run virus/malware scans
REBOOT

Then download FF via Chrome.

I did not say it was an FF file but merely a partial file of something.
Also seems your advice was same as mine - almost.
Running malware scans should be almost redundant these days. (but you never know)

@baddog.... I uninstalled firefox using windows add/remove programs. Should I have tried to do it within Firefox?

Regarding the alert pop up I posted, that was a screen capture after trying to download a file. Based on whatever file I try to download I get a similar error message except the file name changes based on the file name I was trying to download.

Could you elaborate on where I should look for all those steps you noted while in safe mode..should I be exploring in programs section?

@torchwood ..... what does TFC stand for?

Just to address program removal, the Windows 7 Uninstall Programs just does not do as good a job
as, say, IOBit Uninstaller or other more advanced Uninstallers for they find and delete more remnants
of the program as in the registry and elsewhere. One shouldn't be in any program that is to be deleted.
That said, now that you can't reinstall FF you can't uninstall what isn't installed. But you can do the
manual things mentioned to try and get rid of all remnants that may be bogging you down and
eventually install FF again.
Sorry to sound like a broken record but do you have full disk backups or system images from when it
was working right? If yes, recover. If not, have some next time.

Note: If you want to test Cyberfox to see if you get the same problem then you would need either the 32bit version (Like FF 32bit - 32bit plugins work) or the 64biy version if you don't need 32bit plugins.

RE: Download preferences. There's no apply button. If you want the old Preferences Dialog:

Type about:config in the address bar.

Type browser.preferences.inContent into the filter box. Set browser.preferences.inContent parameter to false.

Try this: c:\downloads
I've used that for years without any trouble! Doesn't matter which account I login, that directory is always there and available. I forgot how to "tell" FF c:\downloads, it's somewhere in the options menus.

I wanted to followup.... appears it was a malware issue of some kind, I went and used malware byte program (which I got from one of the link recommendations above.) Unfortunately while the download problem is fixed, I now have a pop up regarding a dll issue, but I am going to post that in another section. It is occurring on every start, or restart.

But the Firefox download problem seems to be solved. Thanks to everyone who helped and I hope you have a Happy Holiday.
